Jeopardy! Second Chance star Long Nguyen shocks Ken Jennings by deploying ‘crazy’ strategy for huge win
JEOPARDY! contestant Long Nguyen has turned heads on Friday’s episode, unleashing what fans described as “chaos personified” gameplay.
Going from a mere $0 to a runaway victory in an intense two-part Second Chance final, Long still wasn’t satisfied with an average score.

He faced UNC-Chapel Hill sophomore Rotimi Kukoyi and Florida grocery specialist Roy Camara.
The Season 39 Second Chance final is worth a potential ticket to the 2024 Tournament of Champions, to be decided in Monday’s match.
After the Jeopardy! round, Roy led with $5,400, Rotimi had $3,400, and Long – three incorrect and one correct- found himself at $0.
Ken, 49, couldn’t resist a quip: “It took a lot of hard work to get back to zero, but you did it.”

The first twist came in Double Jeopardy! when Roy, the presumed frontrunner, bet $10,200 on a Daily Double and got it wrong
‘OH, OKAY!’
Long, with only a handful of clues left and a runaway at $9,200, found the remaining Daily Double, and opted for an unorthodox strategy.
He declared, “I’ll just go with everything,” stunning Ken with his bold move.
The champ-turned-host was taken aback and replied: “Oh, okay!”
Long took his sweet time before correctly responding, “East of Eden,” doubling up, leaving the crowd in a frenzy.
Scores by Final Jeopardy! showed Long at $18,400, Rotimi at $4,600, and Roy at $1,600.
The final clue under “Rivers” read: “A European capital got its name as a consequence of flooding on this river.”
While both Roy and Rotimi were incorrect, going all in, Long nailed it with “The Amstel River,” referring to the Netherlands.
In an even more unexpected twist, he once again bet it all, skyrocketing to $36,000.
‘HOLY CRAP!’
Fans took to social media in disbelief over Long’s insane strategy to seemingly bet it all on every wagering clue possible.
One Reddit user exclaimed, “Dang… Long is crazy!! He went all-in twice when he already had the win. Why is he so crazy?
Another fan wrote: “My god. Long started DJ with 0 points and by the end of the game the only one with a point! And 36,000+ at that!”
A third wrote: “Long is chaos personified”
A fourth wrote: “He’s like a more chaotic (in his style of play) Ben Chan.”
A fifth reacted: “HOLY CRAP!!
And a sixth: “Wow what a FJ bet by Long. I thought that was a hard $800 DD for Roy. Tough break”
A sixth wrote: “Long’s style of play is both extremely impressive and absolutely jarring. He clearly rings in before he’s thought of a response, and sometimes ends up taking laughably bad guesses, which is how he dug himself into a huge hole at the start of the game.
“But then other times, he’ll pull obscure, pure trivia deep-cuts and dominate the bottom row. Add to that the fact that he wagers huge on DDs, and seems completely unfazed no matter what happens.”
TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS APPROACHES
In late December, the Season 39 Second Chance competition, a redemption round for 36 non-winners from last season, kicked off.
Each winner (the first three being Juveria Zaheer, Xanni Brown, and Matt Harvey) claims $35,000 and a coveted spot in a Season 39 Wildcard Competition.
That mini-tournament sees the return of Martha Bath, Lloyd Sy, and more one-two-day winners beginning on January 16.
Wildcard holds two golden tickets to the 2024 Tournament of Champions, which will finally premiere on February 22.
Fans are expressing tournament fatigue across the internet as Jeopardy!’s momentous 40th season – which began in September – has only consisted of past player tournaments.
Some of the “second chances” and “wildcards” were scheduled because of the WGA strike, but the current ones were not.
With regular episodes and new players not returning in April 2024. some fans are arguing: “It’s gotten out of hand.”
Either way, the 2024 ToC will be one for the books.
The big guns like 21-day champ Cris Pannullo, 13-day champ Ray Lalonde, and fan favorites Ben Chan and Hannah Wilson await.
In a major twist, all three-time champions from Season 39 are also competing, including the infamous Yogesh Raut and the “annoying” Jake DeArruda (the tournament is usually for four-day-plus winners).
Twenty-seven overall slots (adding the four winners of fall’s Season 37/38 Wildcard) would make the 2024 ToC the largest contestant field ever.

The winner of the 2024 ToC nabs $250,000 and joins a short list that includes Amy Schneider and James Holzhauer.
They also get invited to the next Jeopardy Masters, so fortune and perhaps even TV fame are on the board come February.
