Last night the reigning WNBA champion Las Vegas Aces took on the team with the league’s post popular player in the Indiana Fever and history was made in the process.

According to Callie Lawson-Freeman of the Las Vegas Review Journal, the announced attendance for the Aces-Fever game was 20,366 – the largest crowd ever for the T-Mobile Arena, which also features NHL games and UFC events. Freeman also noted that it was the largest crowd for a WNBA game since 1999 and the fifth-largest in league history.

“Aces just announced tonight’s game vs. Indiana is the most-attended sporting event in T-Mobile Arena’s history with 20,366 fans. It’s the largest WNBA crowd since 1999, 5th largest ever,” Lawson wrote on X.

Caitlin Clark and the Fever took on A’ja Wilson and the Aces. Clark had a 13-point, 11-assist double-double while Wilson and Kelsey Plum combined for a whopping 62 points (nearly as much as the entire Fever team) in an 88-69 Aces win.

This is hardly the first time that a WNBA game has put up record numbers for attendance this year, but most of those milestones have simply been in surpassing their own marks, not in setting records at venues shared by other popular sports.

Is the WNBA truly turning a corner in terms of popularity?
