2024 MTV VMAs behind the scenes: Taylor Swift poses with Drag Race stars and more buzzy moments that weren’t on camera
Taylor Swift larked around with Drag Race stars as she led the celebrities enjoying raucous moments backstage at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards in NYC on Wednesday.
Swift, 34, posed up with RuPaul’s hit show’s 16th season cast members, which garnered an enthusiastic response from followers of the show’s Instagram page.
‘We need her as a Guest judge ASAP!!!!’ one user suggested. ‘And do a night of a thousand Taylor’s on the main stage.’
The show posted a series of posts on its Instagram page celebrating the meeting.
One caption read, ‘Queens Everywhere (Taylor’s Version)’ while another said, ‘The #DragRace x @taylorswift crossover of our dreams.’
Another read, ‘They came, they slayed, and they served body-ody-ody.’
Others echoed similar sentiments in terms of wanting Swift to be a guest judge, as one person said, ‘Taylor as a guest judge please,’ while another said, ‘This is the extra special guest judge I want to see!!!!!’
One user suggested Swift be ‘the first judge of’ the show’s 17th season, while another said the Shake It Off songstress ‘definitely needs to be a judge’ on the Paramount+ series.
‘Okurrrrrrr… I’m shook! Taylor Swift definitely needs to be a judge on drag race!!!’ one user said.
Said another user, ‘Dreams come true … thanks @rupaulsdragrace for changing our lives again and again.’
Some fans noted how the show’s Dawn was getting to cross paths with her favorite artist.
Dawn joked on her page, ‘I’m gonna throw up.’
Taylor joined stars including Fortnight collaborator Post Malone backstage as they marked their incredible awards show night.
Best New Artist winner Chappell Roan – who wowed with a fiery performance earlier in the evening – lived up to her reputation as ‘Your Favorite Artist’s Favorite Artist’ as she posed with an array of famous faces.
Meanwhile Shaboozey and Benson Boone were seen bonding over a wardrobe malfunction – as Boone bent down to assist with the Tipsy hitmaker’s shoes.
The singer-songwriter’s dominance continued at the MTV Video Music Awards, where she took home seven awards – including the night’s biggest, the trophy for video of the year.
In her speech Wednesday night, Swift thanked her ‘boyfriend, Travis’ for being on set of the Fortnight music video and cheering her on.
Fans rewarded the mention of NFL star Travis Kelce with loud screams.
‘Everything this man touches turns to happiness and fun and magic,’ she said, before shifting gears to the 2024 presidential election and instructing her fans who are over 18 to register to vote.
Swift did, however, avoid discussing Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential bid on stage. On Tuesday night, Swift endorsed the vice president, moments after Harris’ debate with former President Donald Trump ended.
Swift’s awards haul brings her to a career total of 30, tying her and Beyoncé for the title of most-awarded musician in VMA history. Eminem is now the male artist with the most VMAs, at 14.
Swift and Post Malone also took home the first televised award of the VMAs for best collaboration, for Fortnight, handed to them by Flavor Flav and Olympian Jordan Chiles.
The night was stacked with celebrities and featured plenty of Swift, who arrived at the award show wearing a green tartan corset with a matching train and long black leather gloves.
Throughout the night, MTV flashed back to history-making across the VMAs’ 40-year-run, including Britney Spears’ albino python and Madonna’s performance of Like A Virgin.
This year’s VMA festivities were hosted by rapper Megan Thee Stallion and held at the UBS Arena in Long Island.
It featured performances by Katy Perry, Sabrina Carpenter, Camila Cabello, GloRilla, Rauw Alejandro, Benson Boone, Halsey, LISA, Lenny Kravitz, Anitta, Karol G, LL Cool J, and Shawn Mendes.
While Swift became the most decorated artist at the VMAs ever, Sabrina Carpenter had the biggest upset of the night as she defeated her mentor Swift.
The 25-year-old hitmaker earned the coveted Song Of The Year Moon Person over the pop megastar for her smash hit Espresso.
The coveted Best New Artist prize went to one of the hottest artists of the summer, Chappell Roan, as she beat out an impressive field including Benson Boone, Gracie Abrams, Shaboozey, Teddy Swims, and Tyla.
Earlier in the evening Tyla was the big winner as she earned Best Afrobeats for her track Water.
Another artist who was recognized was Blackpink’s Lisa who earned the Best K-Pop honor for her Rockstar music video.
Anitta was also a massive winner as she earned the Best Latin Moon Person for her Mil Veces music video.
