Downton Abbey star Elizabeth McGovern, 63, looks worlds away from the glamorous Countess of Grantham as she films gothic scenes for new TV show The Talamasca in Liverpool
Downton Abbey star Elizabeth McGovern looked worlds away from her glamorous ITV character while filming new TV show The Talamasca at a cemetery on Friday.
The actress, 63, who plays Cora Crawley in the beloved period drama, wore her natural silver locks loose and wrapped up from the cold in a black trench for the tense scenes alongside co-star Nicholas Denton.
Elizabeth could be seen making her way between the headstones for the dramatic drama which serves as part of AMC’s Anne Rice Immortal Universe alongside Interview With The Vampire and Mayfair Witches.
Despite the serious scenes the actress flashed a huge smile between takes and warmed up with a hot drink while chatting to the crew.
Inspired by the works of novelist Anne Rice, The Talamasca will follow the secretive society of the same name, who are the ‘men and women responsible for tracking and containing the witches, vampires and other creatures scattered around the globe.’

According to Digital Spy, Elizabeth will play the role of Helen in the new series, who is described as ‘a seasoned veteran of the Talamasca and the leader of its New York Motherhouse.’
Her character description continues: ‘She has long suspected that London’s Motherhouse has fallen under the influence of traitorous elements, and a mysterious death prompts her to recruit Guy Anatole as her protégé.’
Elizabeth is also working on filming the third Downton Abbey movie with her co-stars Michelle Dockery, Hugh Bonneville and Laura Carmichael.
It will have been a difficult time for the cast in recent weeks after the loss of actress Maggie Smith who played the iconic Violet Crawley in the series.
Last month Maggie, who also starred as Minerva McGonagall in seven of the eight Harry Potter films, passed away in hospital at the age of 89 – and prompted a flood of tributes as celebrities and fans mourned the heartbreaking loss.
In summer the release date for the third Downton Abbey film was revealed as filming began in Yorkshire.
The new movie will be released worldwide on September 12, 2025, with Universal Pictures UK confirming the news on Instagram.
The caption announcing the news read: ‘A new motion picture event. The third film in the beloved #DowntonAbbey franchise will be released only in cinemas September 12, 2025.’

Plot details have so far remained under wraps about the upcoming motion picture, which is written by Julian Fellowes and produced by Gareth Neame, Fellowes and Liz Trubridge.
However it can be expected to follow 2022’s A New Era, which ended in the late 1920s with the heartbreaking passing of Crawley matriarch, Lady Violet.
The third instalment was first let slip early by actress Imelda Staunton, who unashamedly announced that there would definitely be a ‘third and final’ film.
It was later confirmed by the show runners, who announced that there would be a ‘third film in the beloved Downton Abbey franchise’.
