When Taylor Sheridan announced that he would be making a Yellowstone prequel, fans went crazy—especially when they learned Tim McGraw and Faith Hill would be starring in it. And boy, did it deliver. From enduring plot lines to swoon-worthy love stories, 1883 was truly a remarkable season of television. The only complaint we have is that it didn’t last longer! Thankfully, though, the cast is still around, meaning we can catch up with them and find out what they have been doing since the show ended in 2022. Read on for more.

Tim McGraw is definitely a household name—and not just because a Taylor Swift song is named after him. The country music artist has sold over 90 million records and released 16 studio albums since he first entered the scene in the 1990s. He also acts and can be found in Four Christmases (2008), The Blind Side (2009), Tomorrowland (2015), The Shack (2017) and, of course, 1883.
“The biggest challenge of playing James was honestly not crying,” the “Humble and Kind” singer told The Hollywood Reporter in December 2021. “Because there are so many moments as a human and as a parent and as a real person that it was hard for me to hold back tears. And James just doesn’t do that.”
McGraw is 57 and has been married to wife Faith Hill since 1996. They have three kids together.

Due to the amount of chemistry between James and Margaret Dutton, it only makes sense that they decided to cast McGraw’s real-life wife, Faith Hill, to play her. Similar to her husband, Hill is also a very successful country music artist and even released an album with her husband in 2017 entitled The Rest of Our Life. Her acting credits include The Stepford Wives (2004), Dixieland (2015) and 1883 (2021 to 2022).
“We [her and McGraw] have made it a point not to work on our scenes together until we’re on set,” Hill told People in December 2021. “It’s important that we react to one another naturally as characters, not as husband and wife.”
The singer and actress is 57 and has won several Grammys throughout her career.
Isabel May as Elsa Dutton

Unlike her onscreen parents, Isabel May wasn’t that well-known before 1883. Her previous credits include Young Sheldon (2018 to 2020), Alexa & Katie (2018 to 2020) and Run Hide Fight (2020). Then, after leaving Montana, she can be found in The Moon & Back (2022). She also has had several voiceovers in the other Yellowstone prequel, 1923 (2022 to 2025).
“She’s someone that was faced with hardship, pain and loss, and despite all of that, still found beauty in the world around her and still found a way to live fully,” May told People of her character, Elsa. “It’s hard to do when everything around you is wanting to suck you into this kind of miserable role. She became a woman. It’s [the story of] a girl becoming a woman.”
May is 24, and lives in Los Angeles, California.
Dawn Olivieri as Clare Dutton

Clare Dutton (Dawn Olivieri) might have only been in two episodes of 1883, but since she is James’ sister, her legacy will live on in Dutton history forever. Prior to joining the cast of 1883, Olivieri was in Heroes (2009 to 2010), The Vampire Diaries (2011), House of Lies (2012 to 2016), Bright (2017), Den of Thieves (2018), Lioness (2024) and even Yellowstone (2022 to 2024).
“[Clare] had that last moment right before death, where we finally got to [really] see her. We finally understood her. It’s scary, but I think a lot of people in their human experience, maybe that’s their journey, too,” the actress told The Hollywood Reporter in November 2024. “Taylor [Sheridan] writes that moment. He writes that types of characters, and I think it’s really profound.”
Olivieri is 44 and has two children with Eric Johnson.
Audie Rick as John Dutton Sr.

When we think of John Dutton Sr., we often think of the older version played by
James Badge Dale in 1923. But before that, Audie Rick played a much younger incarnation in 1883, and although he didn’t have a lot of lines, he was super adorable.
The actor’s other roles are Kenobi: A Star Wars Fan Film (2019) and Citadel (2023). He is nine years old.

He is also rumored to be joining the cast of Landman for season 2.
“It’s a joy to work with him [Sheridan]. He’s all-powerful and all that, but he’s a nice man on top of it. He’s a taskmaster,” the actor said, per Taste of Country. “He told me in the beginning when we first started this thing [1883], and he was trying to convince me to do it, he says, ‘You’re gonna hate me at the end of this f–king thing.’ We’re approaching the end, and I don’t hate him, so we’ll see what happens.”
Elliott is 80 years old and has been married to wife Katharine Ross since 1984. They have one child.

In 1883, he played Thomas, a man who joins the Duttons on their journey from Texas to Montana.
“So in this world of 1883, maybe there is another Black soldier or Black cowboy 10 miles away who was treated harshly, who might have been called the N-bomb. But in this story, you don’t see that,” the actor told Entertainment Weekly in January 2022. “With this little section of people, Thomas didn’t go through that. He’s a great character, but not a typical character that we’ve seen in other TV westerns. He’s treated with respect and dignity, and he carries himself that way.”
Garrett is 49 and has been married to his wife, Mina Ivanova, since 2017.
