Wonder Woman Movie Officially in Development, James Gunn Says It’s ‘Being Written Right Now’

James Gunn has confirmed a new Wonder Woman movie is officially in development, saying it’s “being written right now.”

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly to promote the upcoming launch of Superman, DC Studios co-head Gunn said this new Wonder Woman movie is being developed separately to the already announced Paradise Lost HBO Max series.

“We’re working on Wonder Woman,” Gunn said. “Wonder Woman’s being written right now.”

A lot is changing for DC’s lineup of movies and shows in the years ahead. James Gunn and Peter Safran, co-CEOs of DC Studios, have a strategy for a more cohesive and interconnected lineup of content moving forward. It all starts with Chapter 1, dubbed “Gods and Monsters.”

It can be very difficult to keep track of all the big changes at DC these days. That’s why we’ve put together this comprehensive list of everything currently in the works, as well as the major projects that have either been officially canceled or gone dormant.

Superman (July 11, 2025) – James Gunn wrote and directs this Superman movie featuring a younger Clark Kent early in his reporting career (though it won’t be an origin story). The film will explore Clark’s struggle to balance his Kryptonian heritage with his Kansas upbringing and deal with the challenge of being a kind hero in an unkind world. The film is shaping up to be one of the first and most important entries in the revamped DCU line.

David Corenswet stars as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan is Lois Lane and X-Men: First Class’ Nicholas Hoult plays Lex Luthor.

The Sandman Season 2 (July 3 and 24, 2025) – Despite widespread critical acclaim and what appears to have been a very successful debut on Netflix, it took several months for the streamer to announce that The Sandman was renewed.

New 'Wonder Woman' Movie Is Being Written Right Now, DC Studios Head James Gunn Says

Netflix did finally confirm that new episodes are in the works, though they shied away from describing it as “Season 2” initially. That may suggest Netflix plans to release new episodes in smaller batches, similar to how Season 1 was followed up by the surprise release of an eleventh episode.

No matter the case, Season 2 will be the last for the show. Netflix says that was the plan even prior to abuse allegations against creator Neil Gaiman going public.
Peacemaker Season 2 (August 21, 2025) – Not everything is being completely rebooted for the new DCU.

James Gunn’s Peacemaker is getting an Amanda Waller spinoff series as well as a second season. We don’t know much about Season 2 yet, though Gunn did tease a mystery character on social media in October, 2024. We also know that Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag, Sr., previously seen in Creature Commandos, will be an antagonist on the show.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (June 26, 2026) – The new DCU will also have a new Supergirl.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is a movie based on Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s comic of the same name. This Supergirl is one who spent much of her early life living on a fragment of Krypton that was dislodged in the planet’s destruction, what Gunn describes as a “horrible situation where she watched everybody around her die.” House of the Dragon’s Milly Alcock plays Supergirl, and Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya, Cruella) directs the film.
Outside of the comics, Diana of Themyscira has had a rough time in recent years.

Her live-action film franchise starring Gal Gadot flamed out after the mixed reception of Wonder Woman 1984, she’s never had a dedicated animated series, and what was supposed to be Diana’s first ever solo video game was cancelled despite being announced all the way back in 2021.

As IGN writer Carlos Morales recently explained, “At the height of competition between the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DCEU in the late 2010s, the first Wonder Woman film was one of the latter’s most undeniable success stories.

The 2017 film received largely positive reviews and pulled in over $800 million at the global box office. After Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad both polarized audiences, Patty Jenkins’ take on Diana connected with filmgoers in a way the last few DC films hadn’t. … The 2020 sequel Wonder Woman 1984, however, was a significant letdown, dividing critics and failing to recoup its budget theatrically.”

That movie was released day and date on HBO Max and in theaters because many filmgoers were still hesitant to go out during the pandemic.

A third film was in the works but development puttered out eventually, and there had been no word on another Wonder Woman feature until now. Of course at this point, with a new Wonder Woman movie in the works, questions over who will play Diana will crop up once again.

Superman hits theaters July 11 and kicks off Gunn’s rebooted DCU in a big way. It’s set before Peacemaker Season 2, which premieres on HBO Max on August 21, 2025. Supergirl comes out on June 26, 2026, but we don’t have a release date for the Lanterns TV show.

Other upcoming DCU projects known to be in the works include Clayface, which has a September 11, 2026 release date. DCU movie The Authority, however, sounds like it’s in trouble. Gunn has said Waller, a spinoff of Peacemaker, “has had a couple of setbacks, frankly.” However, HBO Max series Booster Gold “is going pretty strong,” and Paradise Lost is “slow moving, but it’s moving.”
