Ken Jennings was not Jeopardy!‘s first choice as Alex Trebek’s replacement after his death. However, after the first host removed his name and Mayim Bialik only lasted one season as a co-host, the game show decided to use Ken as the sole new host. However, there are now rumors about the shocking amount that Ken makes.

Here is a look at Ken’s salary and why it is so surprising compared to other game show hosts.

Ken Jennings Makes A Shocking ‘Jeopardy!’ Salary

Ken Jennings and Mayim Bialik co-hosted Jeopardy! after Alex Trebek’s death. Of the two, it seems that Bialik would warrant the most pay, thanks to her celebrity status. However, after she stood up for the striking writers, the show chose not to bring her back, and Ken remained the sole host.

According to recent reports, a source close to the show says that Ken Jennings is the “cheaper” choice for the Jeopardy! host (via Closer Weekly). However, It seems this is okay for Ken, as he isn’t there for the paycheck like other hosting options would be.

“Ken’s been pretty clear from the beginning of his hosting journey that he’s not driven by money as much as he’s driven by a deep love for this game show that totally changed his life and made him world-famous,” the source said. However, while this is admirable, it also gives his Sony bosses all the power in their relationship.

The source said Sony knows “they can pay [Ken] a fraction of what they would have to pay a well-known celebrity, comedian, or even a professional game show host.” Although they said he would make more money the longer he was on the show, Sony knows they can underpay him without affecting his status.

The latest reports suggest that Ken Jennings makes $4M a year to host the show. By comparison, it has been reported that Ryan Seacrest makes as much as $28M a year to host Wheel Of Fortune.

Ken Jennings Made His Money Before Becoming Jeopardy! Host

While he is happy to be the host, Ken Jennings does not need the money. He holds the record for winning the most money on American game shows. Appearing on five game shows, he is also the highest-earning player in history, with $5.296 million in winnings.

When rumors arose that Jeopardy! was considering replacing Ken with a celebrity host, he reportedly wouldn’t give up the role without a fight. “He’s desperate to make it work and has no intention of leaving of his own accord,” the source said. Accepting a much lower base of pay than someone like Ryan Seacrest, Steve Harvey, or Drew Carey will likely help protect his job.
