Tom Cruise starred in one of the biggest movies of the year with Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, but now that the film has been playing in theaters for nearly two months, it’s finally time for it to take its next step. Paramount Pictures has officially announced that the eighth (and likely final) Mission: Impossible movie is coming to digital platforms like Prime Video and Fandango at Home on August 19, just under one month from today. This comes after the film is finally winding down its run at the box office with $588 million globally, including $195 million from domestic markets and $392 million internationally. The Final Reckoning also holds a “certified fresh” 80% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a “verified hot” 88% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter.
The Final Reckoning sees Tom Cruise suit up as Ethan Hunt one last time for his most important mission yet: stopping the Entity once and for all. Mission: Impossible veterans like Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg returned to play Luther Stickell and Benji Dunn for the final time, as well as Henry Czerny, who can be seen as Kittridge. The Final Reckoning also recruited a pair of Apple TV+ stars in Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso) and Tramell Tillman (Severance) to make their franchise debut in the film, along with Oscar-nominated Marvel star and 9-1-1 veteran Angela Bassett. Christopher McQuarrie returned to direct the last Mission: Impossible movie with a script he wrote along with help from Erik Jendresen. McQuarrie began directing Mission: Impossible movies with Rogue Nation in 2015, and he’s helmed all three installments since.
What’s Next for Tom Cruise?
Cruise will soon be seen in theaters in Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s next film, which is lacking a title but currently set for release on October 2, 2026. It also stars Jesse Plemons, John Goodman, and Riz Ahmed, and it follows the most powerful man in the world who causes a disaster and then heads out on a journey to prove he’s the savior of the world. Cruise has also been tapped to star alongside Ballerina’s Ana de Armas in Deeper, an underwater sci-fi thriller that’s due to begin production soon. He’s even expected to reprise his role as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in Top Gun 3, but the film is lacking a release date despite McQuarrie confirming he’s cracked the story.
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning comes to digital platforms on August 19. Stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates and coverage of Cruise’s future projects.
