Tom Cruise’s $286 Million Sci-Fi Epic He Says Is “Full of Extraordinary Twists and Turns” Finally Returns to Streaming

Tom Cruise as Jack in Oblivion

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning has been the talk of the town the last few weeks after collecting over $300 million at the box office in under 10 days, but one of Tom Cruise’s older (and underrated) flicks has finally returned to streaming. Cruise stars alongside Morgan Freeman and Olga Kurylenko in Oblivion, the 2013 sci-fi thriller following a man’s battle to save mankind after a mysterious stranger’s arrival. Oblivion had previously been absent from streaming since it left Netflix at the end of last year, but Prime Video has resolved this by making the film available to watch for all subscribers at the start of this month. The film earned a “rotten” 53% from critics and a 61% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and it grossed $286 million at the box office against a $120 million budget.

During a 2013 interview with Film4, Cruise described Oblivion as a film full of “extraordinary twists and turns.” It also marked the first time he teamed up with director Joseph Kosinski, who went on to helm what will live on as one of the most iconic Tom Cruise movies ever, Top Gun: Maverick. Kosinski, who also worked with Chris Hemsworth in the 2022 critically panned Netflix movie Spiderhead, has also been tapped to direct F1 starring Brad Pitt. Kosinski even worked with Miles Teller and Josh Brolin for the 2017 firefighting biopic, Only the BraveMichael Arndt and Karl Gajdusek wrote the screenplay for Oblivion, which is based on Kosinski’s graphic novel of the same name. Gajdusek is also known for his work on The King’s Man (2021) and The November Man (2014).

A ‘Game of Thrones’ Veteran Also Stars in ‘Oblivion’

While Cruise, Freeman, and Kurylenko own most of the screen time in Oblivion, the film also stars a Game of Thrones icon. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, famed for his role as Jamie Lannister in George R.R. Martin’s hit series, can be seen in Oblivion as Sykes. Oblivion was released during the same time that Game of Thrones was in the middle of airing its second season, so it’s safe to say that 2013 was a great time to be a fan of Coster-Waldau. He’s also known for his role as Horus in Gods of Egypt and Martin in Nightwatch.

Oblivion is now available to stream on Prime Video. Stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates and future coverage on all of Tom Cruise’s projects.
