Tom Cruise Offers Candid Take on The Weeknd Amid ‘Hurry Up Tomorrow’ Backlash
The ‘Mission: Impossible’ actor gave a pointed response.
While Tom Cruise’s latest (and final) addition to the Mission: Impossible series has earned strong reviews early on, the same can’t be said about numerous other recent releases. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning has been labeled certified fresh by Rotten Tomatoes before its official premiere.
One movie that’s specifically received immense criticism is Abel Tesfaye, aka The Weeknd’s, new film, Hurry Up Tomorrow. The movie was released on May 16, 2025, and currently holds a critic rating of just 15% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Weeknd produced and acted in the film, alongside star Jenna Ortega, and while it did receive some praise on social media, many reviews have been extremely harsh.
However, one person who’s having none of the criticism pointed at The Weeknd is Cruise, who vehemently defended the singer/actor on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

“[He’s] so talented [as an] actor, musician, that guy is just so talented,” Cruise said of The Weeknd.
It was lofty praise from Cruise, widely viewed as one of Hollywood’s most successful and talented stars. Although Cruise didn’t directly reference Hurry Up Tomorrow, any love from a star of his magnitude will rightfully move the needle.
However, for those who haven’t seen the film, the magnitude of just how critical some reviews were can be seen below, which were pulled from Rotten Tomatoes.
“Even some die-hard fans may find themselves wishing for a literal interpretation of the title, because Hurry Up Tomorrow can’t end soon enough.” wrote Michael O’Sullivan of the Washington Post.
“This incoherent vanity cesspool (about egos, fame, and trauma) proves that the movie’s production money would’ve been better spent on more therapy for Abel Tesfaye, also known as The Weeknd. Ripping off ideas from the Oscar-winning Misery doesn’t help.” said reviewer Carla Hay of Culture Mix.
It’s worth noting that The Weeknd himself explained the film’s unique approach during a fan screening, writing a letter which was handed out.
While Hurry Up Tomorrow hasn’t resonated with critics, it doesn’t seem to have garnered much interest from fans either. According to Variety, the movie pulled in just $3.3 million throughout its first weekend at the box office.
