But many viewers were most astonished by how good she looks years after finding fame in the 90s.

One tweeted: “Gwen Stefani on the one show is just weird. How has she not aged?! No way is she 53.”

Another wrote: “Love Gwen Stefani!! How is she 53? Looks 30. Would love her to duet with Madonna.”

The One Show hosts Alex Jones and Jermaine stunned the star with a video message from British singer Pauline Black, a childhood idol of hers.

After playing the message from the singer, who founded the ska band The Selecter, Gwen said: “Zoom in guys, these are real tears. Wow I’m shaking. I can’t believe that. That is incredible.

Jermaine, 40, told her: “I can understand why.”

But the US singer replied: “You don’t understand anything, OK?”

Alex joked, as former footballer Jermaine hid behind her in mock-fear: “You tell him, Gwen.”

“She was my idol when I was like 13 and she just talked to me, it’s crazy. You don’t understand too because the music was very underground, we discovered it.

“Nobody knew what it was. They were singing about London so I became a huge fan.”

Gwen shot to fame as the singer and lead songwriter in the band No Doubt before going solo in 2004.

She has won three Grammys and a Brit Award and in 2012 was ranked 13 on a list of the 100 Greatest Women in Music by VH1.
