The Oakland Coliseum’s most exciting recent event took place on Wednesday.
Squealing masses of excited people. Cameras ready, crowds clamouring for a glimpse. Vibrant shouts of “MVP! MVP!” reverberate throughout the hallways.
Superstar standing within the old building. Besides, baseball had no bearing whatsoever.
To celebrate the third anniversary of the Eat. Learn. Play foundation, Curry and his spouse Ayesha went to an Oakland Athletics game. They also took more than a thousand Oakland kids who were enrolled in city camps with them. In addition, they rejuvenated the dull Coliseum, turning it into a thrilling and inspiring place to spend a day.
At the time, it was Oakland Arena, the location of Curry’s previous job. Curry is still deeply devoted to Oakland, California, even if he is now headquartered there and has won another championship there. have profound roots in Oakland, to coin a cliche.
The Oakland charitable organisation Eat. Learn. Play. is dedicated to improving the lives of underprivileged kids. Exercise, education, and diet are the program’s three main pillars. The Currys have committed to donating seven figures annually to cover overhead, ensuring that all funds donated go directly to programmes that support children.
As Ayesha Curry described it, it’s all been “a whirlwind.” Everything has happened so quickly that we haven’t had time to plant any roots. A good deal needs to be done.
When the Currys founded the foundation three years ago, they saw a great need in Oakland and set high goals for its purpose. But seven months after its introduction, the pandemic arrived, and demand for them skyrocketed.
The organisation was able to feed underprivileged families with the aid of neighbourhood food banks, and its quick growth allowed it to learn as it went, providing millions of meals for kids who had been denied school lunches. The group also partnered with World Central Kitchen to rehire restaurant employees prior to their serving the community.
At the foundation, the “learn” pillar has recently assumed a central role. The Currys are working to bridge Oakland’s reading gap, which has been exacerbated by the pandemic. Only 12.5% of Latino children and 15.4% of Black students read at grade level.
To try and “make a dent there,” Curry said.
More than 150 “Little Town Libraries,” or tiny, free libraries, have been built and dispersed across Oakland. Apart from providing $850,000 in funding for more than 800 literacy activities, the organisation launched a $1 million challenge for Oakland educators. They created an ELP van that is used at different events to encourage reading, exercise, and a healthy diet.
When they first unveiled the bus, Ayesha was concerned that the kids might become obsessed with the basketball hoop. Nonetheless, there was a great deal of excitement as the bus’s sides were raised to reveal hundreds of books.
According to Ayesha, the kids were ecstatic to see the books and that they could take them home. “The model is right there for you.”
It may seem unbelievable, but Stephen Curry was not as well-known as he is now. He has emerged as one of the most well-known figures in the world thanks to his four championships, several awards, and numerous appearances in national advertisements.
He hosted the ESPYs one particular Wednesday. A week later, he was spotted giving high fives to elementary school kids at an A’s game.
Eat. Learn. Play, despite the fact that Curry isn’t exactly transparent about his celebrity. Chris Helfrich, the CEO, is aware of this.
Helfrich said, “He hasnt changed one bit, in spite of everything that has happened over the past few months.” There is no doubt in my mind that we are moving in the right way.
“We have noticed a noticeable rise in the quantity of possible collaborators and individuals who are eager to work with us.”
It’s not the Currys who win; it’s making a difference in the lives of children.
Ayesha Curry said, “Our sponsors and donors truly care.” They may be considered the ones on the ground, so to speak. They genuinely seem interested in what we do.
It was a wonderful way to look back on the past three years and ahead to the future to play the game on Wednesday.
Curry played baseball for the last time at the age of thirteen, before he had to choose a high school major. He was thrown to by Mark Kotsay, the manager of the A’s, on Wednesday during batting practice. Curry donned his own A’s jersey over his own personalised “night night” T-shirt, with the words “Eat Learn Play” screen printed on the back.
He complained of hand pain from the wood bat.
He talked with former Giants manager Dusty Baker while the Houston Astros were in town. Following online mockery of Stephen’s form by former teammate Juan Toscano-Anderson, Ayesha and Stephen threw out the first pitch. Curry was supposed to lead the crowd in singing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” during the seventh-inning stretch, but the game was moving too rapidly and he was doing press interviews.
Instead, he wandered aimlessly among the campers’ chairs, almost starting a brawl while he fist-bumped and posed for pictures.
As the afternoon wore on, each camper took a turn jogging the bases. Consume, Study, Have Fun. before they went, gave each camper a bag full of goodies.
As they were leaving the Coliseum, they also discovered a great deal about a basketball superstar who is capable of amazing feats.
Moreover, it is capable of far more amazing things.
