Stephen Curry seemed to injure his ankle during the Golden State Warriors’ 125-122 home loss to the Chicago Bulls on Thursday night. The Warriors did not provide an update following the game, but head coach Steve Kerr did say Curry had “his foot in a bucket of ice” in the locker room.

Curry seemed to roll his right ankle while moving to the basket late in the fourth quarter. He staggered around the court afterward, attempting to walk it off, but eventually abandoned the game and walked directly to the locker room with less than four minutes remaining.

Curry’s absence was noticed down the line, as youngster Brandin Podziemski missed a point-blank layup with seven seconds remaining to tie the game. Lester Quinones, who replaced Curry, missed the game-winning half-court shot.

Despite Thursday’s setback, the Warriors remain one of basketball’s hottest teams, with a 14-5 record in their previous 19 games. During that time, they possessed the NBA’s fourth-best net rating and fifth-best defense, with Curry averaging 26 points, five assists, and five rebounds on 45/41/89 shooting splits.

The Warriors have been going 11-deep with their rotation in recent weeks, and that depth will be tested if Curry is out for an extended length of time. He has only missed three games this season, but Golden State has lost all three. During the team’s recent 19-game winning streak, the offense fell from 118 points per 100 possessions to 107 with Curry on the bench.

Given Curry’s history, an ankle injury always causes deep breaths from anyone involved with the team. Kerr previously stated that Curry appeared exhausted following a difficult shooting stretch, so it would not be surprising to see Curry held out as a precaution, even if the ailment is not serious. Imaging of the ankle is likely to be the next step as Golden State prepares to face the San Antonio Spurs at Chase Center on Saturday.

“We’ve been in this position before where he has had time off, and we’ve just got to do it collectively,” Klay Thompson said of Curry following Thursday’s loss. “I know he’ll be ready to go when he gets back, whenever that is. We just want to wish him a speedy recovery and encourage him to take his time.
