As the premiere of Pop Culture Jeopardy! is nearly upon us, we’re taking a look at the newly released rules of the gameshow including one major switch-up from the traditional show
The season debut of Pop Culture Jeopardy! is set to take place on Amazon Prime Video on Wednesday, December 4. After the premiere, three new episodes will air every Wednesday evening. The new spin-off series will be led by none other than talented Saturday Night Live star Colin Jost and will follow a similar set of rules to that of Jeopardy!.
But instead of academic subjects, participants will be quizzed based on their pop trivia knowledge. Here, we’ve taken a look at the major shakeup.
Pop Culture Jeopardy introduces new ‘Triple Play’ element
While Jeopardy! is an individual journey, Pop Culture Jeopardy! will be broken into teams with three contestants joining together to combine their pop culture knowledge. And while Jeopardy! includes Daily Doubles a whole new element called ‘Triple Play’ is being introduced to the show.
In an update on Instagram, the official Jeopardy! page explained, “In addition to Daily Doubles, there is a BRAND-NEW element hidden on the board called a TRIPLE PLAY. Triple Plays are EXCLUSIVE to Pop Culture Jeopardy! A Triple Play gives teams a chance EARN TRIPLE the clue’s value if each team member of the team can correctly provide one of three possible responses. Incorrect responses allow another TEAM TO STEAL.”
This means that Triple Play will essentially work the same way that Daily Doubles do, but the team is only rewarded the cash prize if all three players answer the three-pronged clue correctly. And while this might sound confusing, Executive Producer Michael Davies assures it will all be clear as day after viewers witness the first game.
As for how Final Jeopardy! works, the post explained, “Players collaborate on their Final wagers and what they think the correct response is. The team with the most points advances to the next round of the tournament.”
Pop Culture Jeopardy’s grand cash prize
As for the grand cash prize, Pop Culture Jeopardy! plans to award the final winning team with a life-changing sum of $300,000. In the new post, it was announced, “Out of 81 teams, only three will advance to the final to compete for the $300,000 grand prize and the first-ever title of Pop Culture Jeopardy! champions.”
As for traditional Jeopardy, contestants typically win in the $20,000 range per episode. If individuals advance and move onto the Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions, they then have the chance to win the grand cash prize of $250,000 with the runner-up recieving $100,000, and the third-place winner receiving $50,000. As for the winner of the Jeopardy! Masters tournament, the final first-place winner receives $500,000 and the Trebek Trophy.
