Pop Culture Jeopardy! contestant reveals producers had to call film festival to dispute wrong answer

On Pop Culture Jeopardy!, there was a confusion with a movie tilted that had to get cleared up by calling a film festival, according to a contestant

The first three episodes of Pop Culture Jeopardy! aired on December 4

Pop Culture Jeopardy! premiered today and there was already a mishap on the show.

The first three episode of the new Prime Video trivia game show debuted on Wednesday, December 4. In the second episode, there was confusion about a film’s title. It involved a film in the category, “It’s All Relative” and the clue read: “Elizabeth Banks, Emily Mortimer, & Zooey Deschanel play the sister to Paul Rudd, the title character of this familial film.” Rob from the trio team, Tinker Tailor Quiz Show Guys, responded to the clue with, “What is My Idiot Brother?”

The answer was considered incorrect and team Little Pocket Monsters was given the points for saying the correct answer of “Our Idiot Brother.” But later on in the show, host Colin Jost made an announcement the Tinker Tailor Quiz Show Guys had their score adjusted to count their answer for that Paul Rudd clue.

“In the previous round, Rob answered My Idiot Brother which we did not accept as correct, but Jordan correctly pointed out that the original title at Sundance was My Idiot Brother, not Our Idiot Brother,” Colin said. According to Entertainment Weekly, Jordan is a freelance writer for the publication.

On a Jeopardy! subreddit thread for the premiere episode of Pop Culture Jeopardy!, this incident was a point of conversation. A fan declared the show “a little liberal” with some decisions such as the the My Idiot Brother instead of Our Idiot Brother situation, calling it a “stretch.”

A contestant on the show named Mike, who shared that their episode will be airing in Week 3 on December 18, talked about the being present at the moment and how the show had to call the festival to confirm.

“Fun fact: This required a deliberation during the break and even phoning the festival in question before it was ruled in their favor. The team knew they would get the points (since they were at the festival and none of us were), we were still kind of shocked anyway lol,” Mike said.

Mike furthered explained why that action was taken when the original commenter stated they thought contacting the festival was “unnecessary” when “a lot of primary sources” exist.

“From what I gather, that’s standard practice on Jeopardy!, it’s not uncommon for producers to call up museums or other venues to verify responses that are flagged as needing clarification. This all happens during production breaks (I would say “commercial breaks” but there are none on Prime Video),” Mike elaborated.

Then they went on to provide an example of this happening in a knockout round game their team was apart of. Mike went on to say no team requested a ruling but the judges had to check their scores anyway so the teams had to turn around and face the wall while it was happening.

The original commenter asked Mike a question about what would the show have done if Sundance didn’t answer “but the proof was out there and readily available.” Mike responded that they were not sure but “that would be interesting.”

“They’d probably go to the written proof as the backup? When that particular episode was taped, even though we were in the same filming group, we were in the contestant area doing various things so we weren’t witness personally. But of course we talked about it after when we all returned to the hotel for the evening,” Mike continued.

Pop Culture Jeopardy!’s first three episodes are on Prime and new episodes will drop on Wednesdays.
