Outrage Erupts as Fox News Host Dana Perino Sparks Controversy, Suggesting Female Domestic Violence Victims ‘Should Make Better Decisions

Bob Costas Defends His Controversial Remarks on Gun Control and Domestic Violence

In the wake of the tragic murder-suicide involving NFL player Jovan Belcher and his girlfriend Kasandra Perkins, sports commentator Bob Costas found himself at the center of a heated debate over gun control and domestic violence. During a halftime segment on NBC’s Sunday Night Football, Costas referenced a column by sports journalist Jason Whitlock, stating that had Belcher not possessed a gun, both he and Perkins might still be alive. The remark immediately sparked backlash, with critics accusing Costas of using a high-profile tragedy to push a political agenda on gun control.

Following the controversy, Costas took to the airwaves to clarify his stance, explaining that he had been misunderstood and did not have sufficient time to fully articulate his views. In an interview with sports radio host Dan Patrick, Costas elaborated on his comments, emphasizing that his intention was not solely to advocate for stricter gun laws but rather to initiate a broader discussion on the underlying issues that led to the tragedy.

“What I was trying to say was, that if you want some perspective on this, there are a number of issues related to [Belcher’s murder-suicide] that we could begin to talk about and think about,” Costas said. “The problem was that I didn’t have enough time to get to many of them. And that, I think, was my mistake to be quite honest.”

Costas argued that while gun accessibility was a factor in the tragic event, there were other contributing issues, such as mental health, domestic violence, and the culture of professional sports. He expressed regret that the brevity of his segment allowed for only a surface-level analysis, leading to a misinterpretation of his broader point.

Supporters of Costas praised him for attempting to foster dialogue on the dangers of gun violence and its role in domestic abuse cases. They noted that many instances of domestic violence turn fatal when a firearm is present. According to studies, the risk of homicide in domestic violence situations increases significantly when a gun is involved, a point that Costas seemed to be addressing.

However, critics remained steadfast in their disapproval, arguing that Costas overstepped his role as a sports commentator by injecting personal political beliefs into a football broadcast. Some accused him of oversimplifying a complex issue, pointing out that while gun control may play a role in preventing violence, it does not address the root causes of abusive relationships, mental instability, or systemic failures in addressing domestic violence.

Despite the controversy, Costas stood by his assertion that these conversations need to happen, particularly when high-profile tragedies bring these issues to the forefront. “If we’re going to talk about it, let’s talk about all of it,” Costas said. “Not just one aspect.”

His remarks reignited a broader debate on the responsibilities of media personalities in addressing social issues. Should sports commentators speak on political and societal matters, or should they stick to their primary role of discussing the game? The debate remains ongoing, with Costas’ remarks serving as a flashpoint for deeper discussions on gun violence, domestic abuse, and the role of media in shaping public discourse.

Fox Nes commentator Dana Perino suggested during a live broadcast that female victims of domestic violence should ‘make better decisions’ to avoid getting hurt

Outrage as Fox News host Dana Perino says female victims of domestic violence ‘should make better decisions’

Fox News commentator Dana Perino suggested during a live broadcast that female victims of domestic violence should ‘make better decisions’ to avoid getting hurt.

Perino made the remark during a discussion on the murder-suicide of NFL player Jovan Belcher, who shot and killed his girlfriend before turning a gun on himself.

For months prior to the shooting, the couple had been having problems and police had previously been called to their home as a result.

VIDEO: Is Dana Perino blaming women for being victims of assault?

Fox commentators were discussing the implications of the crime and whether laws governing gun rights should be reexamined in the aftermath.

Fox host Greg Gutfeld said the violence may have been prevented if Belcher’s girlfriend was carrying a gun the night she was killed.

That’s when Perino, the former press secretary for George W. Bush, chimed in.

‘I think it skirts the issue,’ she said. ‘Women are victims of violence all the time.’

Gutfeld cut in and insisted, again, that more women should carry guns.

‘Well, maybe, or make better decisions,’ Perino quipped.

Viewers lashed out at Perino on Twitter for the remark.

Perino isn’t the first commentator to draw the ire of viewers in discussing the touchy subject of gun rights and domestic violence in the aftermath of Belcher’s murder-suicide.

Fox Sports commentator Bob Costas angered viewers when he suggested that stricter gun laws might have prevented the crime.

Costas praised a column by sports writer Jason Whitlock and told his viewers, ‘In the coming days, Jovan Belcher’s actions and their possible connection to football will be analyzed. Who knows? But here, wrote Jason Whitlock, is what I believe.

‘If Jovan Belcher didn’t possess a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today.’

Costas later defended his remarks, saying he didn’t have enough time to explain himself and that he was misunderstood.

‘What I was trying to say was, that if you want some perspective on this, there are a number of issues related to [Belcher’s murder-suicide] that we could begin to talk about and think about,’ Costas told sports radio host Dan Patrick. ‘The problem was that I didn’t have enough time to get to many of them.
