Julianne Hough shares why her relationship with American Idol’s Ryan Seacrest ended

The actress revealed that she felt like she was “swept up” by Ryan’s Hollywood life and she had to “overcompensate” so he didn’t feel used by her

Julianne Hough has opened up about what led to her and Ryan Seacrest’s breakup.

The actress dated the TV host from 2010 to 2013 and during an interview with Dax Shepard for his Armchair Expert podcast, she reflected on their relationship and what led to them going their separate ways.

The Dancing With the Stars alum shared that she began dating the American Idol host early on in her career when she was an aspiring country music star, who was got wrapped up in her then boyfriend’s Hollywood lifestyle. “The rug was swept up from underneath me, and I was just flying and I was experiencing things that I didn’t even know existed,” Julianne shared on the podcast. “But then I had this insecurity that I was like, ‘I don’t ever want anybody to think that I’m with him for this reason.’ And so I then started playing smaller.”

She shared that Ryan had previous experiences and situations where he felt like people were “using” him and she didn’t want to be one of them. “I again overcompensated, [I] was malleable to fit into exactly what somebody needed me to be for them to be happy,” she said.

“When I decided to break things off, I had a lot of these Brentwood moms and producers in that world that were like, ‘What are you doing?’ And I was like, ‘What do you mean?’ They’re like, ‘Your life is completely set up,'” she said she was told. “And I was like, ‘But I didn’t build it.’ I was like, ‘I need to create this. Competitively, it’s not mine. I need to feel the pride of doing it.'”

Talking about her previous relationship made the dancer reflect on her other romances, and she even wondered if she had ever experienced love fully. “What I’ve realized over the years is I don’t know if I’ve ever truly been in love with someone, but I have loved the feeling of being loved—and so let me be what that needs to be so that I can be loved,” Julienne said. “And then because I’m so filled with love from someone, of course I love you. I love everyone. I’ve been in love with everyone I’ve ever dated, but have I? I don’t want to overanalyze it, because every person I’ve also dated has been a very good person.”

Julianne married NHL player Brooks Laich in 2017 but they went their separate ways in 2019 after saying it didn’t feel “right” early on in their marriage. “That was the year [2017] we got married and the year everything kinda started to unravel,” she told the actor. “We both have regrets that it didn’t work out, because I don’t think we had the maturity to come together. He was contracting while I was expanding. We just couldn’t find each other in that.”

As for Ryan, the TV producer is currently single and has never married. He recently ended his relationship with Aubrey Paige in April. “After three beautiful years together, Ryan and Aubrey have mutually decided to part ways,” a source close to the couple revealed to People. “They plan to stay in each other’s lives as good friends and support one another’s endeavors.”
