The Kansas City Chiefs secured a dramatic late victory over the Cincinnati Bengals thanks to Harrison Butker’s walk-off field goal, leaving Joe Burrow stunned.
Burrow began celebrating as initially the Bengals had forced a turnover on downs late in the fourth quarter before a late flag moved the Chiefs within field goal range. Patrick Mahomes was faced with a fourth and 16 play on a drive that the Chiefs needed to score from, and his throw to wide receiver Rashee Rice was no good.
However, officials determined that Bengals safety Daijahn Anthony hit Rice before he had an opportunity to make the catch, and Butker converted a 51-yard field goal to hand the Chiefs a 26-25 win. It was another game-winning drive from Mahomes who is considered the best quarterback in the NFL, but Burrow is still 3-2 when facing the three-time Super Bowl champion.

During the offseason, Burrow crossed enemy territory as he appeared on the “New Heights” podcast with Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce and his recently retired brother Jason. It was on the show that Burrow claimed the Bengals were “built” to beat the Chiefs, although the final result didn’t match his confidence.
“We both work really hard at what we do. They got great players, we’ve got great players,” Burrow said on the podcast hosted by the Kelce’s. “I think we match up pretty well with them. We’re kind of built to beat them. Both teams have big-time players on defense, big-time defensive lines, so it makes for great matchups.”
Not only did the Bengals suffer a cruel defeat, it was a defensive error that allowed the Chiefs to kick the game-winning field goal.
Burrow does have the upper hand when it comes to Mahomes though, and is one win away from becoming the first quarterback to have four victories over him. Tom Brady only managed three victories over Mahomes during his career, although he was in his 17th season when the Chiefs star entered the league.
When Burrow and Mahomes meet on the field it’s always blockbuster, and incredibly close. All five games have been decided by a field goal, and to Burrow’s credit, the Bengals never seem out of any game against the Chiefs regardless of how the team is performing.
Burrow may have been humbled by the Chiefs win, but Bengals cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt was left feeling smug after picking off Mahomes. Taylor-Britt aimed a bid at Chiefs rookie Xavier Worthy ahead of the game by saying that the wide receiver is good at running, and not much else.
“Speed, that’s about it,” Taylor-Britt told reporters when speaking about Worthy. “He can run straight – run jet sweeps and just run straight. He can’t do too much else, so that’s about it.”
Mahomes targeted Worthy at the end of the third quarter but Taylor-Britt read the play and pulled off a stunning one-hand catch to hand possession back to the Bengals. Worthy had just one catch for five yards against the Bengals, a major dropoff from the two touchdowns he scored in Week 1 against the Baltimore Ravens.
