Jeopardy! viewers left red-faced over shocking answer as season opener introduces ‘terrible’ new categories

Jeopardy! viewers were less than impressed with the new categories that were introduced

Jeopardy! viewers have waited months for the return of the beloved gameshow – only to be left fuming at the ‘awkward’ new categories that were introduced during the season launch on Monday night.

As Ken Jennings returned to front the ABC favorite, he revealed that ‘Parenting’ and ‘Mom and Dad’ would be among the categories that would feature in the first round of questions.

But it wasn’t long before viewers became irked by the Mom and Dad category, while others were left red-faced at talk of nudity.

It all kicked off when Ken, 50, asked for $600: ‘This paternal name for a rich benefactor comes from little orphan Annie?’

Strategy consultant Amanda White from Seattle, Washington then buzzed in and hesitated before she said: ‘What is a sugar daddy?’

‘No. I’m sorry,’ Ken replied, before giving returning champion Rachel an opportunity to answer.

She then correctly guessed: ‘What is Daddy Warbucks?’

‘That’s it,’ Ken said, confirming the right answer. ‘A little different than a sugar daddy.’

Later on in the game, Ken asked a Parenting question, which shocked viewers.

Reading the clue, he said: ‘Is this ok in front of your kids? Ali Wentworth and Heidi Klum have publicly said it is for them and theirs?’

Naval officer Adam Reiffen guessed ‘swearing’ and Amanda tried ‘going to the bathroom,’ but they were both incorrect.

Ken then put the players out of their misery and revealed the right answer.

‘It’s actually nudity,’ he said. ‘Being naked in front of the kids.’

Viewers at home were a taken aback by the ‘terrible’ categories, with one posting on Reddit: ‘To be fair, my 91-year-old grandfather also thought the answer was sugar daddy.’

Another replied: ‘That whole PARENTING category was awkward.’

A third added: ‘The Annie clue was actually in the Mom and Dad category. But yeah the Parenting category was terrible.

‘Several of the clues belonged more on Family Feud than Jeopardy!’

A fourth wrote: ‘That one parenting clue was…why would you do this to us?’

Over on X, many viewers were in fits of hysterics over Amanda’s ‘sugar daddy’ answer.

‘Jeopardy! is wild,’ one simply wrote, while another admitted, ‘I’m rooting for Amanda because she likes sugar daddies.’

‘Sugar daddy in little orphan Annie? I thought of Annie to be more wholesome,’ another added.

Monday’s episode marked the launch of Jeopardy! season 41.

Kicking off the brand new series, Ken said at the top of the episode: ‘We are just thrilled to be back here on the Alex Trebek Stage joined by our reigning champion, Rachel Bradley, and two new challengers Adam and Amanda. Best of luck to all three of you.’

By the end of the game, Adam was hailed the first Jeopardy! champion of the season after he correctly guessed Final Jeopardy.

He ended the episode with a winning score of $16,001.
