Jeopardy! fans react to new secret rule that sees winners return as Grant DeYoung competes again

As Jeopardy!, viewers watched Grant DeYoung leave after his recent winning streak came to an end, they were shocked to find out that he would be returning.

TV viewers were under the assumption that after losing on the quiz show, it meant contestants would leave and never return. However that’s not the case as it appears Grant will be back. After Grant’s four day win came to an end after he’d racked up total of $81,203, it was revealed he would be returning as part of the show’s upcoming Tournament of Champions.

As he discussed his defeat with host Ken Jennings, the presenter told Grant that he “had a feeling” the curly haired quiz show guru would be back on screens soon. Fans were left confused though, as one wrote on Instagram: “Why will he be back, I thought 5 wins for toc?” Others asked the same, before some helpful viewers explained that elimination wasn’t a set rule and that sometimes players can return, depending on the eligibility window for the tournament.

One person wrote: “Victoria [Groce] was only a 1-day champ during her original Jeopardy appearance, so maybe we will see [Grant] again someday.” Another responded: “I hope so. They brought back Yogesh [Rout] and I think he only won a couple of games.”

Another fan added: “All 4 game champions were eventually qualified at ToC in the last 3 editions. With a shorter eligibility window and the expansion of ToC field in the last 2 editions, I think Grant might get in the 32nd ToC. Since 2021 TOC where all 4 game champions competed, some of them made it to the semifinals.”

Another rule that viewers also only recently found out includes that contestants can use chairs rather than standing for the duration of the show. One person wrote: “Looks as if we have another tall one, and his name is Grant he was sitting in a chair tonight.” Whilst another asked: “Why do some contestants sit on chairs and others stand? Just curious, no complaints.”

However Grant took to Reddit to clear up any confusion as he wrote that the producers allowed him to sit in a chair because he suffers from “back arthritis.” He explained: “They give it if you ask. I have some back arthritis that makes standing still for that long very difficult. I wouldn’t expect everyone who sits for Jeopardy! to disclose their reason for needing one, but I don’t mind saying mine.”

Previous contestant Amy Schneider used a chair before during the end of her run on Jeopardy! Masters last week. At the time, viewers noticed the chair as they took to social media. One viewer wrote on Twitter/X: “I have watched #Jeopardy my whole life and today is the first time I saw a chair. I thought they were always standing.” Another added: “I only noticed because Amy was moving around in it.”

Amy revealed on social media that she was under the weather on her final day of filming, so had used a chair during the show. She explained: “It’s a fact that I wasn’t feeling well on the day we taped the semifinals. They had a chair out for me because I was experiencing some dizziness and wasn’t sure I could stand for a whole episode.”
