Jeopardy! fans were left disappointed as the Friday game show was cut short due to “breaking news coverage of a plane crash.”
During the Friday, Jan. 31 episode of Jeopardy, contestants Kevin Laskowski, an Episcopal priest from Falls Church, Virginia, Allison Gross, a data scientist from Cleveland, Ohio, and Mark Fitzpatrick, a content manager from Riverside, Connecticut took the stage to participate in the Tournament of Champions quarterfinal game 5.
In the high-stakes game, the three players were quizzed in a number of categories testing out their wide-ranging trivia knowledge ranging from “Way, Way Back in the Day” to “On The Movie Soundtrack.” And while most viewers at home were able to tune in for the entire episode, some folks were interrupted by news of a plane crash in Northeast Philadelphia.
Many viewers watching from the Philadelphia area were unable to watch the second half of the show due to the breaking news coverage and took to social media to air out their frustrations. One viewer on X, formerly Twitter, wrote: “I like breaking news as much as the next person but you can’t preempt #Jeopardy!” Another added: “I mean this could have been an email.”

Someone wrote: “WPVI knows Philly loves its #Jeopardy. This is how you cut in for breaking news.” A user updated: “Sorry, there’s breaking news, and it’s in an area of NE Philly which I’m very familiar… see you all next time #jeopardy.” Over on Reddit, someone else shared: “WPVI in Philadelphia preempted all of Double and Final Jeopardy for breaking news coverage of a plane crash in Northeast Philadelphia.”
The crash in question was a small plane that went down in Northeast Philadelphia, and hit a row of houses. The 6 p.m. accident resulted in a massive fireball explosion which led to multiple house fires on in the area of Cottman Avenue and Roosevelt Boulevard.
And while not every viewer at home had the chance to catch the ending, Allison brought home the victory for the night ending with an impressive total score of $13,400 which included 15 correct responses and 2 incorrect answers. This beat out her fellow competitors Mark and Kevin who ended with a total score of $12,200 and $6,200.
