Kato was a witness in OJ Simpson’s criminal trial. In 1994, the late and former running back with the Buffalo Bills and San Francisco 49ers faced charges for the murder of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman. The two were found stabbed to death at Nicole’s Los Angeles residence. OJ was accused of murdering Nicole and Ron and the trial was televised in the United States, which made headlines worldwide. Eight months later, a jury found OJ not guilty at the start of October 1995
During his testimony, Kato said that he heard a “bump” during the night of the murders and went outside to find OJ in the yard. Prosecutors later said Kato’s testimony showed that the NFL star was trying to sneak back home after the killings.
The former NFL star died at the age of 76 after a battle with cancer on April 10, his family announced. A statement posted on his social media accounts said: “On April 10th, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren. During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace.”
