A Jeopardy contestant was confused by a misogynistic clue during her time on the iconic gameshow.

The show is known for having tough questions that can sometimes baffle both the contestant and the audience. There have been moments before that outraged viewers at home, this most recent time is no exception.

Heather Ryan was a contestant on the show last Monday, competing against Ian Taylor and four-day champion Will Wallace. She is a health program director from Binghamton, New York, and she explained her experience to Binghamton University student newspaper called Pipe Dream.

The category with the unfortunate clue was “Complete the Rhyming Phrase.” The clue was “men seldom make passes…” to which Wallace correctly responded, “girls who wear glasses.”

After the answer, Jennings noted it was “a little problematic,” specifically apologizing to Heather. Wallace then added: “Very.”

Heather told the student outlet that she was surprised by the clue, and everyone could sense the tension.

“It is definitely an odd choice. I think it made everybody in the audience and on stage, and Ken Jennings too, a little uncomfortable.

“It was like, ‘oh, that was unexpected.’ Maybe we choose better rhyming phrases in 2024. Unfortunately, there are still girls who are [in] middle school and they don’t want to wear their glasses and they’re losing out on their education. So, I think it’s much better to be able to see than anything else.”

Despite the experience, she will still cherish her time on the show. She always enjoyed trivia and getting her chance on the game show made her dreams come true.

She said: “It was very fun. I had a great time. Everybody there was very welcoming.”
