Dallas Mavericks are considering drafting Bronny with their only draft pick.NBA prospect Bronny James is not on track to be the first pick in the upcoming draft, but recent reports have indicated a rising interest in his game across the league. Specifically, the Dallas Mavericks have become the latest franchise to consider Bronny and there is a strong belief that they could draft him with the 58th overall pick.
“The Mavericks would have interest in selecting Bronny James with the 58th overall pick in the upcoming NBA Draft,” wrote NBA insider Marc Stein. “But the Mavericks also realize it’s extremely unlikely that James will still be available for selection. All current indications suggest that LeBron James’ 19-year-old son will be selected earlier in the second round before Dallas makes the last pick in the draft.”
The 2024 NBA Draft is in just a few months and so far nobody can agree on what the top prospects are. Bronny, despite his fame, doesn’t rank among the best right now but it didn’t stop him from declaring for the draft at the first chance he got.
James, 19, averaged just 4.8 points per game at USC but his family name and advanced understanding of the game have made his development one of the biggest stories of the summer. While there was some doubt that he was an NBA-ready prospect, his performance at the combine was enough to generate some serious interest.
Besides some of the skills he brings to the table, there’s a chance that Bronny’s arrival is followed by LeBron’s and it has only helped to raise his overall draft stock. Even at 39 years old, King James has the impact to shake the NBA hierarchy, and his upcoming free agency will allow him to choose whatever team he wants.
Whatever happens in the Finals this year, the Mavericks have a lot of reasons to consider drafting Bronny. With a thin backcourt rotation, Bronny’s arrival could add some depth to the guard position and his playmaking ability could help keep the offense running when Slovenian star Luka Doncic or Kyrie Irving is off the floor.
More importantly, the Mavericks could use Bronny to lure LeBron, and pairing him with the two-star guards would be devastating for the West. As former championship teammates, we already know that LeBron and Kyrie Irving have a desire to team up together and the Mavericks would be doing them both a favor by making it happen in Dallas next season.
Unfortunately for the Mavericks, Bronny seems to be set on either going to the Suns or Lakers and has shut down any workouts with opposing teams. And since the Lakers possess the Nos. 17 and 55 selections in the June 26-27 draft, it’s very unlikely that Bronny is even available when it’s their turn to pick.
As long as the Mavericks are still alive, their focus will be on winning the Finals this season but when/if they drop their next game, I think they should start figuring out their plan to re-tool. As great as Daniel Gafford, Dereck Lively II, and PJ Washington have been for the team, they need some more star power to tip the odds in their favor.
Both LeBron and Bronny can give the Mavericks the help they need but it remains to be seen if they can find a way to pick him up before he’s off the board.
