Cameron Brink draws powerful A’ja Wilson take after Aces clash

The Los Angeles Sparks are off to an 0-2 start after dropping their second game of the season on the road against the defending champion Las Vegas Aces, 89-82. While the Sparks have yet to get a win, there have been some encouraging signs for the team to start the 2024 season. One of the bright spots for the Sparks so far has been their No. 2 overall pick in Cameron Brink. Brink struggled a bit during the Sparks loss to the Aces but following the game she drew strong praise from Aces star A’ja Wilson as per Nick Hamilton of Nitecast Media.

“She has a really, really bright future. I’m glad that the Sparks drafted her, because I feel like that’s a great franchise for her to really grow and not just. . .I don’t think Curt’s going to put her in a box,” A’ja Wilson said. “So I think that franchise is going to grow around her and let her spread her wings and be the Cam that we all see. So I’m excited to see her grow and just continue to build, understand and get a feel for the league.”

“Like I said, this is a different ball game for all of us, especially for rookies, but for all of us. We’re all bringing something new to every single season. So once she gets adjusted to the league and how she can really maneuver and play in her way, I think she has a good future.”

Cameron Brink is the future for the Sparks

Cameron Brink may not have come into the WNBA with as much hype and attention as Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark, but Brink has the potential to be one of, if not the league’s top rookie this season.

Brink was in foul trouble throughout the Sparks first game against the Atlanta Dream, but she showed flashes of potential on both the offensive and defensive ends of the court. She finished with 11 points, two rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots. She shot 4-of-6 from the field and 2-of-3 from the three point line.

Brink started to incorporate the three point shot into her game during her final season at Stanford. She took a college career-high 2.0 attempts per game. Judging by her early showings in the WNBA, she is going to be a solid floor spacer as a pro.

Against the Aces, Brink finished with only three points. She struggled, shooting only 1-of-7 from the field and 1-of-5 from three point range. She did manage to grab eight rebounds and block five shots. She is the defensive anchor in the paint that the Sparks have lacked in quite some time.

Brink has also shown solid chemistry in the frontcourt with Dearica Hamby. The pair played and trained together during Team USA camp for the 3×3 event in the Olympics. Both players are very versatile in that they can score in multiple ways and they can defend multiple positions. If everything breaks right for the Sparks, they could very well find themselves with one of the top frontcourt pairings in the league.
