An ancient prophecy said to have predicted every pope for hundreds of years dictates the next Catholic leader after Pope Francis will be the last before judgement day.
The “Prophecy of the Popes”, which was supposedly written in the 1100s by Saint Malachy, allegedly lists 112 popes. The list is now almost at its end, with just a reference to “Peter the Roman” left before the end of times.

Although the book does give accurate descriptions of the popes up to around 1590 a severely accurate lack of descriptions follow. So much so that some tried to connect “Peter the Roman” to the Argentinian Pope Francis, due to his Italian heritage and his birth name — Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone.

Pope Francis died on Monday, April 21, following a stroke which led to a coma and ultimately “irreversible cardiocirculatory collapse,’’ according to the Vatican. Following Pope Francis’ passing, Catholic Church leaders have begun preparations to elect his successor through a conclave of 120 cardinals, all under the age of 80.

The final entry surrounding “Peter the Roman” who was prophesied to be pope in 2027 says the “last pope” will lead the church during a time of immense turmoil, which will culminate in the destruction of Rome and the end of the papacy.
“In the final persecution of the Holy Roman Church, there will reign Peter the Roman, who will feed his flock amid many tribulations, after which the seven-hilled city will be destroyed and the dreadful Judge will judge the people. The End,” the last passage reads.
The dramatic prophecy’s final passage has triggered concerns of the apocalypse among some faithful, linking the arrival of Peter the Roman to Judgement Day in 2027. French astrologer Michel de Nostredame (Nostradamus) is also said to have predicted Peter the Roman’s reign.
Historians argue that the text may have been written for political purposes. Many scholars say that its predictions became deliberately vague after its discovery, leaving interpretations highly subjective.

After Catholics across the globe observe Novendiale – nine days of mourning- the Pope will then be laid to rest in Santa Maria Maggiore basilica in Rome, Italy. The process to elect a new pope then begins, with the church’s most senior officials, the College of Cardinals, convening to conduct an election.
This group of potential new popes are typically ordained bishops appointed directly by the Pope. As it stands there are 252 of them, although only 138 will be eligible to vote for Pope Francis’ successor. On Tuesday, April 22 Pope Francis’ body was pictured in an open coffin for the first time as Vatican funeral preparations begin.
The 88-year-old was presented for the Confirmation of the Death of the Pontiff ceremony. The placement of his body in the coffin took place last night at the Chapel of Santa Marta, according to the Vatican. Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Vatican camerlengo, conducted the official declaration of death in a ceremony lasting under an hour.
