The rise of online hate speech in the sports world is concerning. Players, officials, and even the fans at times get targeted with various inappropriate comments that not only may impact their performances but also harm their mental health. So, how to stay away from all of these? Well, Coco Gauff has a solution to all these problems – one should build up a love for the “Block Button“!
Yeah, that’s exactly how the 20-year-old American tennis star keeps all the negativity away from her on social media. She has time and again faced several such social media abuses, including hate, negativity, and many other derogatory comments from angry gamblers. A prime example of such an incident was witnessed during the 2023 WTA Finals. After her exit from the tournament, she faced a lot of trolling and criticism.
Reflecting on her approach to counter those kinds of stuff she clarified, “I only block people who are negative, not my fans.” Gauff added, “It (daily harassment) is exhausting. So I try my best to spare myself.” Now, shortly before starting her campaign at the 2024 Wimbledon, she was asked to reflect a bit on what she hates and loves the most, being a professional tennis player.
Replying to that question during the press conference, Coco Gauff revealed, “One thing I don’t like? May be just the bad angry betters online. They are a bit annoying but I love the ‘block button’. So, I know it was like a thing on Twitter about how much I block people but it’s like ‘bye’ (laughs)“. Coco Gauff’s 1.7 million strong Instagram following is a double-edged sword. While it connects her with a massive fanbase, it also exposes her to negativity. Not every follower is there for positive reasons. With a single click, Gauff can silence those who spread hate or negativity, ensuring her online space remains a place for genuine connection with her supporters.

However, she has time and again reminded the fans about how much she loves them and appreciated them for their true support. Elaborating on her presence on social media, Gauff once revealed, “The reason why I stay active on socials is because of my fans. To see their nice comments and support. It keeps me going.” Is it the same thing that she loves most about being a professional tennis player?

During that same interview ahead of the Wimbledon Championships match, Gauff spoke about the things that she loves most on the Tour. She shared a recent incident stating, “There are many things I love, but surely the best thing about being a tennis player is the connection with people. Last week I met a boy who is my fan. He started to get emotional when he met me.“
Gauff believes it’s those things and those interactions that make her see that what she does on the court matters. No matter if she’s having an amazing time and winning everything or if she’s having a hard time and losing, those interactions with people are what she feels quite satisfying. With time she has now also started to draw inspiration from all the negativities that try to pull her down. Share your thoughts on this side of being a ‘superstar’ in the sporting world.
