Late last year, Bill Belichick parted ways with the New England Patriots and committed to a heavy media appearances schedule to fill his free time. Nevertheless, sources close to him say the seasoned head coach is more than willing to come back at the helm of a team in 2025, but only under the right circumstances.

Bill Belichick was a staple on the Patriots sideline for almost a quarter a century. His incredible resume, which includes six Super Bowl rings and 333 wins–second best behind Don Shula’s 347–seemed to guarantee the former coach the job he wanted on any team he wanted.

However, the coaching carousel came and went without anyone making a serious offer for his services. Undeterred, Belichick accepted several high-profile television analyst gigs, including weekly appearances on ESPN’s “ManningCast” and “The Pat McAfee Show.”

The former coach’s schedule includes segments on “Inside the NFL,” the SiriusXM podcast “Let’s Go,” and his own YouTube TV show, “Coach, with Bill Belichick.” Despite this flurry of media appearances, Belichick still has every intention of returning to coaching next year, ESPN insider Adam Schefter said.

It has to be the right circumstances

In an op-ed for ESPN’s website, Schefter revealed that sources close to Belichick say the coach would be willing to take over a team again, but it would have to be the right job under the right conditions.

“Belichick still would like to return as a head coach in 2025 if the right opportunity presents itself,” said Schefter. From this perspective, the analyst considered, Belichick’s work in the media would be just a way to stay abreast of what is happening in the league, preparing himself for an eventual job as HC.

However, “Belichick is expected to be choosy if and when he returns to the sideline,” Schefter’s sources said. According to the analyst, the former coach already had a couple of opportunities to join a coaching staff, but they were not in the position he would have wanted, which is being a head coach.

Belichick rejected the 49ers and the Rams

According to Schefter, the San Francisco 49ers offered Belichick the job of Defensive Coordinator when they fired Steve Wilks after their loss in Super Bowl LVIII to the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Los Angeles Rams also sought Belichick’s services after the departure of Defensive Coordinator Raheem Morris, who is now head coach of the Atlanta FalconsBelichick turned down both offers.

With a full year ahead of him to receive new opportunities, Belichick can take his time to evaluate each one and choose the one that best suits his interests. After all, we are talking about the most successful head coach ever.
