Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour stop in Lisbon turned tumultuous on Friday as frustrated fans tore down a fence after enduring hours in the sweltering heat. The 34-year-old pop sensation, known for hits like “Blank Space,” launched the European leg of her tour on May 9 in Paris, with Lisbon marking her first show in Portugal this weekend.

The anticipation was palpable as fans eagerly awaited entry into the Estádio da Luz stadium. However, the excitement quickly turned to frustration as they were left waiting outside for 45 minutes. One dedicated fan, who had traveled from afar, lamented, “I’m just sad. I’ve spent thousands and thousands of dollars to see Taylor. Please. I just want to be inside.”

The singer's first show in Portugal did not get off to a great start as eager fans were left waiting outside for 45 minutes to enter the stadium

Another fan from Amsterdam, who came with three friends, expressed her disappointment after waiting in line for an hour and a half, only to be sent outside again. “We’re herded cattle. There’s absolute chaos,” she said.

The situation escalated when 200 fans breached security gates, forcing their way into the stadium and causing alarm among the staff. Massive queues formed outside the arena due to the delay, with fans shouting at staff to let them in. Originally, gates were set to open at 4 PM for standard ticket holders, but fans were not allowed entry until 4:45 PM.

A staff member described the chaotic scene, stating, “There were loads of people pushing everyone. They tore the fence down. There were only two security guards outside, so extra security had to be deployed to deal with the rowdy fans. They started to yell ‘let us in, let us in.’ The fans were hysterical because of the delay.”

The staff member also noted the disturbance and fear among co-workers, adding, “Everyone was pushing and screaming. The staff are quite disturbed and scared by the incident. I don’t know what caused the delay, but we had to wait for the VIP guests to get inside while other fans were forced to wait.”

The concert, featuring an opening performance by rock band Paramore, was scheduled to begin at 6 PM, but did not start until after 7 PM. By the time Taylor Swift took the stage at 8 PM, temperatures in the open-roofed stadium had soared to 66 degrees.

Initially, security enforced a strict no-water-bottle policy, but the rule was relaxed due to the prolonged wait in the intense heat, allowing fans to bring in water bottles.

Despite the chaos, Taylor Swift did not apologize for the delay when she took the stage. Instead, she expressed her gratitude to the fans, saying, “This is my first time getting to come to Portugal, and this is how you welcome us. When I first walked out in the show and I looked out and saw the crowd, you took my breath away. My heart was beating so fast. You just made me feel so loved. Thank you so much.”

Taylor is set to perform again in Lisbon before moving on to Madrid to perform at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu stadium on May 29.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour is not just about music; it’s a visual and sartorial feast. Earlier this month, she resumed her £1.4 billion tour in Paris, debuting new outfits from The Tortured Poets Department (TTPD). Fans were ecstatic as she delivered high-energy performances and an updated setlist featuring six new tracks from TTPD, along with dazzling new costumes.

In Paris, Taylor wowed the audience in a white taffeta Vivienne Westwood dress with a corseted bodice and dramatic hip draping, emblazoned with her own lyrics, “I love you, it’s ruining my life.” She also donned an orange and pink jeweled bodysuit with matching knee-high boots, and a black and silver tasselled mini dress, each look meticulously crafted to match the theme of each era she represents on stage.

The Eras Tour has seen Taylor Swift making significant changes to her setlist to incorporate songs from her latest album, The Tortured Poets Department. This has resulted in some fan-favorite tracks being replaced, much to the disappointment of many. Songs like “Tolerate It,” “Long Live,” “The Archer,” and “The 1” have been swapped out, causing a stir among her loyal fanbase.

One fan expressed their dismay on social media, saying, “Woke up to the worst news that Taylor Swift has cut Long Live from her set. I walked down the aisle to that song last month. Please do it in London.” Another fan criticized the changes, stating, “Taylor has cut songs from Evermore in favor of songs from her new album, WHICH I DO NOT LIKE.”

Despite these reactions, the tour’s financial success is undeniable. Ticket sales are projected to reach approximately $1.4 billion, potentially making The Eras Tour the most profitable tour ever, surpassing Sir Elton John’s farewell tour, which grossed around $939 million.
