Gwen Stefani reveals why she can’t listen to a lot of No Dount songs

Gwen Stefani became a household name while serving as the lead singer of No Doubt, but she admitted recently that she can’t listen to any of those old songs.

The 54-year-old singer helped form No Doubt in 1986, though it wasn’t until their 1995 breakthrough album Tragic Kingdom that she found fame.

She left the group in 2004 to start her wildly successful solo career, and now 20 years later, Stefani is opening up about why he can’t listen to those old songs.

Stefani appeared on the Audacity Check-In  show last week, where she revealed the specific reason why she can’t listen to her old songs, after she and husband Blake Shelton rocked disco costumes.

‘I can’t listen to a lot of the songs because they speak so clearly to me. And it’s like, you know, you have regrets, you have mistakes you’ve made. And most of the songs are about that,’ she admitted.

One particular song – her 2000 track Ex-Girlfriend – elicts a stronger response than most, bringing her to the verge of actually vomiting.

‘If I do Ex-Girlfriend, even when I say it, I almost throw up in my mouth,’ Stefani admitted during the interview.

‘Just knowing exactly where I was in that moment to write that song and what I know now? It’s just like, ‘Oh, my God.’ It just brings you right back.

One of the band’s first big songs – 1995’s Don’t Speak – was written about her split with bandmate Tony Kanal, who she dated from 1987 to 1994.

As for Ex-Girlfriend, that 2000 song was written about Gavin Rossdale, who she was married to from 2002 to 2015.

While she can’t stand listening to most of those old songs, she still does enjoy performing them live.

‘There’s lots of times you’ll be on tour and doing the repetitive songs but it’s not the songs. You’re with these new people every night and they’re receiving the songs,’ she said.

‘I can’t believe I was chosen to have this life because it’s such an incredible way to express yourself and to know yourself. And the songs do that,’ she said.

It was recently announced that Stefani will reunite with her No Doubt band-mates for the first time in nine years at Coachella this year.

The highly-anticipated concert will take place over two separate weekends, first on April 12-14 and then on April 19-21.

Stefani hasn’t released a solo album since 2017’s You Make Me Feel Like Christmas, though she’s been keeping busy on The Voice.

She reunited with No Doubt for their 2012 album Push and Shove, though it’s unclear if she’s making new music with her old group again.
