Over the last three seasons, the New York Yankees have experienced alarming slumps that have raised questions about leadership and player performance. From 2022, enduring 5-15 stretches has become an unfortunate trend for the Yankees, a stark contrast to their more consistent prior years.

The struggles continued into the 2023 season and now, halfway through 2024, the team appears stuck in the same rut. Manager Aaron Boone has repeatedly delivered hopeful mantras, like Sunday’s “It’s all right out in front of us,” which now almost seem to mock their recurring issues. Given the track record over these years, belief in a turnaround without significant changes diminishes.

Scrutiny must intensify not only on Boone but also on key players who have not met expectations. For instance, although rookie Anthony Volpe has seen changes to his batting order position, more incisive action is necessary elsewhere on the roster.

DJ LeMahieu, once a reliable clutch performer, has seen a decline corresponding with persistent foot injuries and diminishing offensive contributions. LeMahieu showed limited effort, explained by Boone as him pushing through pain, yet this isn’t enough for a team in desperate need of reliability and energy. His fading performance, including a severe drop in productivity in crucial games, makes a case for promoting prospects or integrating new players who can deliver more impact.

Pitcher Caleb Ferguson has already seen his role reduced, left out of crucial game moments in the recently concluded Red Sox series. With other relief pitchers handling previously assigned duties effectively, it seems suggesting a Designated for Assignment (DFA) status for Ferguson might be forthcoming unless a stark turnaround happens.

Meanwhile, outfielder Trent Grisham’s early promise has been overshadowed by a significant drop in engagement and performance. Even Boone’s decisions have paradoxically rewarded Grisham’s underwhelming performances with higher batting order placements, a move that baffles many and calls Boone’s judgment into question.

These ongoing issues highlight a need for a shift not just in player lineup but potentially in leadership, as Boone’s optimistic outlook has yet to translate into positive results on the field. If the Yankees are to reclaim their prestigious standing and competitive edge, bold decisions will be needed – likely starting with Boone and involving strategic shifts among the players who have become symbolic of the team’s recent struggles.
