Dodgers’ Yarbrouch Set to Make History With Unique Pitching Style

In an era where pitchers are relentlessly working towards mastering the art of delivering powerful and spinning pitches, Ryan Yarbrough of the Los Angeles Dodgers stands out for an entirely different reason: he throws the slowest fastball in major league baseball. With an average speed of 86.5 mph, Yarbrough’s fastball lingers at the bottom of the charts among 149 pitchers who have thrown at least 45 innings up to Wednesday, data from FanGraphs indicated.

Interestingly, Yarbrough’s pitching strategy resembles more of a game of wits than a show of brute force. Out of his 21 appearances to date this season, he has impressively lasted more than one inning in 17 of those outings.

“It’s kind of like playing ping-pong,” Yarbrough described his own technique to The Athletic. He elaborated on the importance of varying speeds and maintaining an element of unpredictability to keep the batters guessing and, ideally, uncomfortable.

Perhaps even more notable is Yarbrough’s potential to make history as the first reliever in nearly two decades to notch over 100 innings from the bullpen within a single season. Halfway through this season, he’s already pitched 49.1 innings, tracking towards a milestone that hasn’t been achieved since Scott Proctor of the New York Yankees in 2006. This feat underscores Yarbrough’s unique value to the Dodgers, especially in a time when the role of a multi-inning reliever is becoming increasingly rare.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has praised Yarbrough’s versatility and importance to the team’s strategy. “He’s been a linchpin for us,” Roberts commended, highlighting how Yarbrough’s capacity to cover multiple innings has been invaluable, especially given the constraints on using other pitchers on consecutive days.

While Yarbrough remains humble and focused on contributing to the team’s success, his ambition to hit the 100-inning mark is clear. However, his main priority remains the team’s collective goal and leveraging his unique pitching style to serve the Dodgers in any capacity needed. With his distinctive approach and commitment to the team, Yarbrough is rewriting the narrative on what makes a pitcher valuable in today’s fast-paced, power-driven game of baseball.
