Kidd has a simple but valid reason for his pick that will certainly raise more than a few eyebrows. While there is no doubt that Jordan changed the game of basketball, the Mavs coach couldn’t disregard the overall impact beyond the basketball court.

“I think LeBron will go down as the greatest to do it. When you look at his numbers — what he’s done on and off the floor — no one’s done that. You got to put the whole package together. He’s the greatest of all-time,” Kidd said, per Dwain Price of Mavs.com.

The usual argument for Michael Jordan’s case is his six championships and clean 6-0 Finals record. The Chicago Bulls also struggled when he briefly retired and then returned to championship status when he came back, proving that he’s the biggest piece to the team’s championship puzzle.

MJ is also one of the greatest scorers of all time, but his impact extends beyond the offense as he was also an elite defender during his time.

But in terms of career numbers, LeBron James has long surpassed Jordan. One could even say he could have more MVP trophies had the narrative about him didn’t change. His longevity is also insane, something that is rarely seen in the game.

James has also been a huge role model for other players. He has stayed away from issues off the basketball court, all while establishing himself as a beacon of change in his community.

As usual, though, the debate between who’s the GOAT between the Lakers leader and Bulls legend is unlikely to be ever settled. Like Jason Kidd, people have different standards when it comes to their GOAT takes. Not to mention that it’s really hard to compare players in different eras, with the game being played differently and the rules changing as well.

All people can do is make assumptions, which is definitely not the best standard when trying to determine who’s the GOAT. Other players can also make a case for that title, and in the end, it’ll just lead to more debates.
