Angel Reese Loses $100,000 Bet to Shaquille O’Neal: ‘I Guess I Owe Him’

During a recent meetup with O’Neal, the WNBA star challenged him to make a basketball shot from the free throw line for $100,000

Angel Reese is enjoying her free time these days following the end of her WNBA rookie season – but she likely didn’t expect that losing $100,000 to Shaquille O’Neal would be on her list of extracurricular activities.

During a recent meetup with O’Neal, Reese, 22, challenged the 52-year-old NBA legend to make a shot from the free throw line for $100K — and it was a breeze for former Orlando Magic star.

In a video on her Instagram Stories, Reese shows herself telling O’Neal, “$100,000 if you make this shot.” Without another word, O’Neal immediately nailed the shot, and Reese erupted in cheers. She captioned the video, writing, “I guess I owe him 100K .”

Reese and O’Neal have developed a mentoring relationship and friendship since her time as a standout at Louisiana State University. The four-time NBA champ (and fellow LSU grad) has said, “She’s probably the greatest athlete to ever come out of LSU sports. You heard it here first. Male or female.”

After she was drafted into the WNBA back in April, O’Neal shared the advice he had for Reese during her inaugural season in the league.

“I am described as Angel’s understandable ear,” O’Neal told PEOPLE exclusively of Reese. “I know things that she went through, I know what she’s going through, I know what’s about to happen to her and I could give her advice.”

The basketball legend, who was the number one pick in the 1992 NBA Draft before going on to play for six NBA teams over his 19-year career, said the rookie can find comfort in his advice due to his experience in the league.

O’Neal said when they “speak about greatness,” he’s “seen it” and “heard it.” Therefore, he said, “you can take my word for it.”
