Taylor Swift teared up as she paid tribute to her late grandmother during her Eras tour’s first two gigs in Glendale, Arizona, on Friday and Saturday.

The 33-year-old pop star paid tribute her grandmother Marjorie Finlay while performing at State Farm Stadium, which hosted the Super Bowl last month.

Taylor became emotional while performing the 2020 song, which was named for her maternal grandma.

Fans in the audience took and shared footage from the opening acts on social media.

TikTok user mlpowers007 posted an outtake to her personal account, captioned ‘Such a wonderful homage to Marjorie.’

Fans first heard the poignant song in December 2020, when Taylor unexpectedly released her album Evermore.

It came only five months after the publication of her critically praised album Folklore.

When the Pennsylvania-born composer put out the new music, she revealed that Marjorie was composed with her grandma in mind, who’still visits me sometimes…if only in my dreams.’

The poignant lyrics recall timeless advice given down by Finlay, who died in 2003, as she included the line: ‘Never be so nice you forget to be clever, and never be so clever you forget to be kind.’

Swift also discussed Marjorie’s experience as an opera singer with the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra.

Perhaps the most moving aspect of the album is the sound of Finlay’s vocals backing Taylor in the background.

Swift stated at the time of the song’s release: ‘My mum found a lot of her old tapes of her singing opera, and I sent them to Aaron Dessner, who added them to the song.’

‘It says, “If I didn’t know better, I’d think you were singing to me now,” and then you hear her, you hear Marjorie sing,’ Taylor said.

The song Marjorie is one of 44 tracks on the musician’s three-hour setlist.

The late diva never saw her granddaughter follow in her musical footsteps as she became a global sensation.

Finlay died when Swift was 13 years old, a year before she signed her first record deal.

Taylor focuses on her grandmother’s aspirations in the dedication, singing, ‘All those closets of backlogged dreams / And how you left them all to me.’

The video outtakes from the concerts show an emotional Taylor overtaken with emotion as Marjorie’s voice echoes around the stadium.

One fan commented on one of the posts, saying, ‘She dragged Marjorie’s backlogged aspirations out of the closet and into the spotlight for the entire world to hear.’

Someone else said, ‘She took Marjorie’s backlogged fantasies out of the closet and onto the great stage for the entire world to hear.’

Swift astonished on stage during her high-profile performances in Glendale, which was dubbed ‘Swift City’ for the weekend.

She flaunted her statuesque figure and delivered a powerful performance that did not disappoint.

The 12-time Grammy winner took the stage in dazzling knee-high boots as part of one of her outfits.

She next changed into a bedazzled silver jacket, followed by a fringed champagne minidress and a sensual one-legged black bodysuit embellished with ruby red snakes.

Taylor’s sixth headline tour will hit the road in the United States for the next five months, culminating in a series of shows in Los Angeles this August.
