It’s near guaranteed that Travis Kelce‘s summer probably is more fun than the one any of are having. He’s got another four weeks before the Chiefs report for training camp. Maybe he can squeeze in another jaunt to Europe to see girlfriend Taylor Swift.
But since he is closing in on his 35th birthday, there are questions as to how much longer he’ll play for the Chiefs or anywhere else in the NFL. After all, big brother and podcast-partner Jason Kelce retired from the Eagles earlier this season and now will be an analyst for ESPN’s Monday Night Countdown pregame show.
Travis Kelce is doing acting gigs on TV now. He even did a bit with his girlfriend on stage at the Eras Tour stop in London in front of Prince William and other British royalty. But we digress. (check it out)
The co-hosts of the podcast Bussin’ with the Boys asked the Chiefs All-Pro tight end about how much longer he’ll play. He gave a definitive answer, then hedged.
“Wear and tear me baby, no-load management over here,” Kelce joked. “I’m 100 percent doing the next two years.”
Then Kelce briefly knocked wood. Yes, he can be superstitious. After all, he did sustain some nicks last fall, missing two games. He caught only 93 passes (as if!) for 984 yards. It’s the first time in eight seasons he didn’t surpass 1,000 yards.
“I’m at least doing (two years), then we’ll see what the future holds,” Kelce says. “I know there are other opportunities off the field for me. I think that was something Jason was really comfortable with, juggling whether he was going to come back. It’s just a situation, I said it the other day, I love coming into work. I have so much fun. I still got the fire to keep getting better, I still got the fire to go out there and do that (stuff) every single day. (And) I can’t really put a number on it, I just know I have two more years on my contract and we’ll see what happens after that.”
The Chiefs signed Kelce to a two-year, $35 million contract earlier this year. For the first time in his career, he’s the highest-paid tight end in the NFL. He’ll receive $17 million, guaranteed, in 2024. The second year is almost all guaranteed.
It’s almost time for Kelce to shut down his off-field fun for the summer. The Chiefs kick off preseason training camp, July 21, at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Mo. But since he enjoys himself so much, toiling in training camp probably will be refreshing as Kelce and the Chiefs try for a third straight Super Bowl.
