On Saturday, MLB saw it’s second benches clearing incident in two days as tensions boiled over during the game between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Tampa Bay Rays. It all started with a simple bunt.
With the Tampa Bay Rays 3-1 up in the seventh inning, up stepped Jose Caballero. He would make a bunt which allowed the runner on third base, Justin Turner to come home. As Caballero made his way to the first base, the throw from the Blue Jays players went wide, giving him the chance to cover more bases.
While he got tagged out at third, he accidentally ran into Genesis Cabrera who had ran to third to cover up the base. The reliever though did not seem pleased and used some words before putting his hands on his opponent. This led to both benches being cleared as the two sets of players stormed the pitch.
Fortunately, there was no more physical fighting after this. A few moments later, everyone went back to their dugout as the incident defused rather quickly.
Cabrera was ejected from the game for his actions in this incident. He though admitted his mistake later on and claimed he “overreacted” a little bit.
It was more the heat of the moment. I think I kind of overreacted a little bit. He looked at me and I just reacted.
Genesis Cabrera said via his interpreter as per MLB.com.

Will Genesis Cabrera be suspended for his actions in this game?
After Genesis Cabrera was ejected from the game, one thought that came up in the mind of the Blue Jays fans was will he now be suspended for his actions in this game. So far, Major League Baseball (MLB) has not made any statement regarding this matter.

In some benches clearing incident, players sometimes are handed out suspension for their part in the brawl. Cabrera himself was once suspended alongside Nolan Arenado during his time with the St Louis. Cardinals in 2022 for his actions in a bench clearing brawl against the New York Mets.
His manager John Schneider feels the situation was handed well by everyone involved and hopes he (Cabrera) does not get suspended.
I hope not. It was handled really well by everyone, the umpires, Tampa [Bay] and us. I hope not. It was one of those things where it happened, they issued warnings and everyone was fine with that
John Schneider said on Genesis Cabrera’s potential suspension.
Following Cabrera’s ejection, the Blue Jays surrendered another run through a sac fly and ended up losing the game 5-1. The Rays will now enter the field on Sunday while hoping to clinch the Opening series against their AL East rivals with another victory.
