Caleb Williams Breaks His Silence On Likely Being Drafted First Overall By The Chicago Bears

USC Trojans quarterback Caleb Williams has given his honest take of (likely) being selected first overall by the Chicago Bears in next month’s NFL Draft.

For several months now, the 2022 Heisman Trophy has been considered a virtual lock to be selected first overall this year. With Chicago trading away starter Justin Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers over the weekend, it all but assures that Williams will be a Bear come Apr. 25.

During an appearance on FS1’s “The Herd with Colin Cowherd“, the 22-year-old Williams expressed tremendous excitement about joining the Bears:

“I think it’s going to another big city. I’ve heard that they love football, so if that’s the place, I’m excited for that. The fans love football. One of the biggest things that I care about is a place that cares. If that was the place, I’d be excited.”

The Bears haven’t had a true superstar quarterback since Hall of Famer Sid Luckman, who played for the franchise from 1939 to 1950. And with all due respect to Jim McMahon, that legendary 1985 Bears Super Bowl 20 championship team was led by its star-studded defense.

Mitch Trubisky (the No. 2 pick of 2017) wasn’t the answer. The Bears didn’t see enough from Fields to continue building around him. So barring any massive surprises, Caleb Williams will be the next highly-touted QB prospect looking to give Chicago its first All-Pro-level signal-caller in more than seven decades.

Caleb Williams Could Be The Final Piece For The Bears

At this point, it’s not a stretch to say that Caleb Williams is all the Bears are needing at this point to emerge as a contender.

Chicago is not lacking in game-changing players on either side of the ball. D.J. Moore, Khalil Herbert, Cole Kmet and newcomers Keenan Allen and D’Andre Swift round out a dynamic set of playmakers on offense.

The defense improved considerably in year two under Matt Eberflus, and a full season of Montez Sweat plus the arrival of Kevin Byard should help this unit reach another level in 2024.

Add it all up, and the Bears are simply one Caleb Williams away from rounding into a championship-caliber team. That is, of course, if Caleb Williams comes exactly as advertised.
