When the Angels walked into the visitors’ clubhouse at Dodger Stadium on Friday, their lineup board simply read, “Welcome Anaheim Angels.”

The Angels officially dropped Anaheim from their name in 2013 but it doesn’t change the fact that the Angels play there. They play in Orange County, not Los Angeles County.

That is why when they play the Dodgers, it is called the Freeway Series. It isn’t a crosstown rivalry and is not an inter-city rivalry.

The Dodgers represent Los Angeles, just look at the logo. Where is Los Angeles represented in an Angels uniform?

Former Los Angeles Times columnist Arash Markazi once wrote, “There’s nothing worse than being inauthentic and doing something halfway, and the Angels claiming Los Angeles represents both. They took on the name of a city where they don’t play and, worse yet, did so without displaying the city’s name in their stadium, on their uniform, or merchandise. It’s almost as if they don’t want to upset their fans in Anaheim, who want nothing to do with L.A. and would never wear anything with Los Angeles on it.”
