LOS ANGELES — The opening game of the series at Dodger Stadium on Tuesday night was an edge-of-your-seat contest filled with lead changes and pivotal moments. It was a bit messy and fraught with squandered opportunities for both the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondbacks, but it kept fans glued to their seats until the very end.
The pivotal moment came in the ninth inning. With the Dodgers trailing by one, down to their final out, and the bases clear, Will Smith and Freddie Freeman hit back-to-back doubles to even the score. The stage was then set for Teoscar Hernández, who drove in Freeman with a clutch single to left field, delivering his third RBI of the night and the game-winning run.
The ever-determined Hernández expressed the team’s relentless spirit post-game, saying, “We’re never going to be out of it. We’re always going to be fighting until the last out.”
Earlier, former Dodger Joc Pederson briefly put Arizona in front with a solo homer off Evan Phillips in the ninth, marking his 77th career homer at Dodger Stadium—a number that ties him with Dusty Baker for 12th all-time in the ballpark’s history.
The Dodgers initially lost their early lead but regained momentum in the seventh, thanks to a home run by Shohei Ohtani during the Japanese Heritage Night celebration. Arizona’s counter came as they eked out single runs against three different Dodgers’ high-leverage relievers, including a pivotal moment in the eighth when Blake Treinen made a costly error handling a sacrifice bunt.
Arizona strategized early, focusing on matchups against the Dodgers’ leading hitters. Yet, despite facing an opening left-handed pitcher for the seventh time this season—a tactic mainly deployed by Arizona—Los Angeles was ready. Dodgers’ Hernández capitalized by tripling on right-hander Ryne Nelson, Arizona’s primary pitcher for the night, which scored the Dodgers’ first run against an opener this season.
Throughout the game, the critical batters for the Dodgers—Ohtani, Smith, Freeman, and Hernández—were instrumental, combining for 10 hits and driving in all six Dodgers runs. This collective effort highlighted their importance to the lineup, contrasting with the rest of the team’s 2-for-17 hitting performance.
Despite some shaky pitching, Bobby Miller managed a commendable start for the Dodgers, overcoming a challenging fourth inning where Christian Walker of the Diamondbacks hammered a two-run homer to tie the game.
The night concluded with Evan Phillips picking up the win (1-0), limiting the damage during his inning of work, while Paul Sewald took the loss (0-1) for Arizona.
Looking ahead, the Dodgers’ Gavin Stone is slated to pitch Wednesday at 7:10 PM against an Arizona team adjusting to the loss of Jordan Montgomery to the injured list with right knee inflammation.
