When it rains, it pours and it is pouring heavily on the Miami Marlins at the moment. After enduring a 0-7 homestand, the team lost their eighth successive game on Thursday night against the St. Louis Cardinals. With the win of the New York Mets against the Detroit Tigers, the Marlins are now the only team in the league who are yet to win a single game.
In a tight game, they found themselves leading 4-1 thanks to two solo home runs from Jake Burger and one two-run bomb by Josh Bell. However, once again this season they failed to protect their lead.
The Cardinals would put five runs in the seventh inning with some impressive hits from them and some poor defensive plays by the Marlins. After the game, manager Skip Schumaker admitted the struggles of the team and claimed they had to figure out a way to hold on to the lead.
We’ve got to figure out a way to hold the lead. It’s just what it is. We’ve had plenty of times where we had leads late. We just haven’t won the games and held on. We’ve just got to figure out a way to to step up and hold them late in the game.Skip Schumaker said as per Jordan McPherson of Miami Herald.
The Marlins are now the first team since the Minnesota Twins and the Atlanta Braves to start a season 0-8. Both the Twins and Braves endured this tough start in 2016 which saw them finish 59-103 and 68-93 respectively.

After reaching the MLB postseason last year, the expectations were high from the Miami Marlins. The addition of power hitter Tim Anderson felt like a massive boost to the offense of the team. Things though have not gone as planned for them.

Fans on social media have expressed their displeasure with the performance of the team. Some fans took shots at Jazz Chisholm Jr. after the 26-year-old recently spoke about the former leaders of the clubhouse. One upset fan on X urged the management to sell every player from the team.

One of the major concerns for the team has been their pitching department. So far this season, their relief pitchers have pitched with an high ERA of 6.58 and have given up 29 runs in total in 39 2/3 innings.
To make matters worse, the team also announced that top pitching prospect Eury Perez will be out for the whole season as he undergoes Tommy John surgery. Somebody now has to step up for the team in this dark phase if they were to get their team back on the winning track.
