The Seattle Seahawks breaking in a new offense under coordinator Ryan Grubb, who’s making his first foray into the professional ranks, remains one of the more under-heralded summer storylines.
A longtime college assistant, Grubb spent the past two seasons as the University of Washington’s offensive coordinator, helping the Huskies to the 2023 CFP National Championship game with an explosive offense.
With OTAs underway, the first signs of Grubb’s plan will trickle out, but we won’t get a full gauge of how DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett and Jaxon Smith-Njigba will be utilized until training camp and preseason action. How will the run game, a staple under Pete Carroll, fit in?
Quarterback Geno Smith told The Jim Rome Show this week that Grubb’s offense offers things he’s never done in a dozen years in the NFL.
“In the past two weeks, I’ve seen plays that I have never seen before, and that’s something to say for a 12-year veteran,” Smith told Rome. “Coach Grubb, he’s come right in, and like coach (Mike) Macdonald, he’s laid it out for us. He’s set the tone. He’s got high expectations. We got high standards. The guy, he’s got some plays. I can’t wait to get out there and show the world, but not too soon. Not too soon, but when the time is right, we’ll be able to unleash this offense.”
Smith added that Grubb’s history of getting multiple weapons involved, as he did at Washington with Rome Odunze, Ja’Lynn Polk and Jalen McMillan — all three selected in the first three rounds of the 2024 NFL Draft — portends an explosive Seahawks offense.
“You’ve seen that at UW and even the colleges that he was previously at. He’s just always had a really good offense,” Smith said. “Schematically, it’s going to be great. It’s really going to be good and I think it’s going to help all the players. We’re all going to fit into the (scheme).”
The Seahawks offense returned the same set of skill position players that finished middling last season in terms of scoring (17th) and yards (21st). Seattle is counting on Grubb’s acumen to take that group and raise the level of creativity.
