After waiting for three long months, the 2024 MLB season witnessed its first cycle, courtesy of Texas Rangers’ newbie Wyatt Langford, in a compelling Sunday night game against the Baltimore Orioles. The Rangers clinched the game with a dominant 11-2 victory, marking a significant achievement for both Langford and the Texas franchise. This feat registered the 11th cycle in Rangers’ history, with the last one being hit by Carlos Gómez back in 2017.
The evening for Langford began on a quieter note with a fly-out during his first at-bat against Orioles’ pitcher Cole Irvin. However, Langford swiftly changed gears and showcased his batting prowess.
In the fourth inning, he nailed a triple off Irvin, followed by a double in the fifth inning against Nick Vespi, a single in the sixth inning facing Dillon Tate, and capped it off with a home run in the eighth inning against Matt Krook. Langford’s remarkable performance included hits off four different pitchers, exhibiting not just his batting skills but also his speed and hustle on the field.
His journey through each base hit was captured and shared by MLB on social media, marking his impressive achievement with a clip of all four hits, from single to home run.
Before becoming a professional, Langford was picked fourth in the 2023 draft by Texas and quickly established himself as baseball’s No. 4 prospect entering this season. According to R.J.
Anderson, scouts had already been bullish on Langford’s offensive abilities even before he made his pro debut. Despite a rough start to his major league career, with a batting average of .224 and a subsequent hamstring strain sidelining him in early May, Langford made a robust comeback post-rehabilitation.
Since his return to the field, he has boasted a .275 batting average, significantly reducing his strikeouts and rapidly evolving as a key player for the Rangers.
Langford’s cycle achievement set him apart as the first rookie to accomplish this since Elly De La Cruz did so the previous year, and he became the second Rangers rookie ever to hit for the cycle, following Oddibe McDowell’s cycle in 1985. His cycle was also the first in MLB since Jose Altuve’s on August 23 of the prior year.
Despite the electrifying performance from Langford and moments of brilliance from the team throughout the season, the reigning World Series champs are trailing with a 38-46 record, sitting eight games away from a wildcard spot in the postseason race. With the season progressing, time is of the essence for the Rangers, who are in dire need of a series of victories to make a solid playoff bid. The exceptional display by Langford against the Orioles might just be the spark the Rangers need to reignite their hopes for a post-season appearance.
