Rangers Can’t Shake Off Scoring Slump in Latest Defeat to Orioles

In a closely contested matchup on Friday night, the Texas Rangers fell short in a 2-1 loss to the Baltimore Orioles, continuing their struggles on the road. Despite a solid pitching performance, the Rangers’ bats were kept quiet, managing a mere four hits throughout the game.

The Rangers, now 37-45, have faced consecutive defeats at the hands of Baltimore, making them winless in their current road trip which kicked off in Milwaukee. This string of losses comes on the heels of Rangers’ general manager Chris Young expressing optimism about the team’s chances to pivot their season in a positive direction.

Baltimore’s starting pitcher, Albert Suarez, together with the Orioles’ bullpen, effectively tamed the Rangers’ offense, limiting them to just one run on the night. A highlight for the Orioles was rookie Colton Cowser’s solo home run in the fourth inning off Rangers’ starter Max Scherzbcduler (1-1). Scherzer’s outing was notable as he surpassed baseball legend Greg Maddux for 11th place on the all-time career strikeouts list, having equaled Maddux’s record in his first start of the season.

The game saw Scherzer pitching 5 1/3 innings, allowing two earned runs and four hits, including Cowser’s home run which broke the deadlock. He also recorded four strikeouts. The Rangers’ bullpen, featuring Jacob Latz and Jose Leclerc, held Baltimore scoreless in their combined efforts.

Despite these pitching performances, the Rangers’ offense struggled throughout the game. They managed to score their lone run in the seventh inning on a bases-loaded walk by Leody Taveras, which narrowed the Orioles’ lead to 2-1. However, with a chance to level the score, the Rangers couldn’t capitalize as Marcus Semien, their only All-Star Game voting finalist, grounded out with bases still loaded.

The inability to convert on scoring opportunities was evident as the Rangers left five runners in scoring position with two outs and went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position. This offensive drought marked a significant downturn from their recent four-game winning streak at home.

Looking ahead, the Rangers aim to bounce back as they continue their four-game series against the Orioles, withMichael Lorenzen set to start for Texas against Baltimore’s Cade Povich on Saturday. The series will conclude on Sunday with Andrew Heaney taking the mound for the Rangers against the Orioles’ Cole Irvin, as both teams look to secure their positions in the ongoing series.
