Padres Welcome Back Nabil Crismatt on a Minor League Deal

Nabil Crismatt, a right-handed pitcher, has rejoined the San Diego Padres, announcing his return on his Instagram account. After being released from a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers, Crismatt has found a new home with the Padres, signing a minor league deal, as reported by Annie Helibrunn of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The 29-year-old Crismatt is no stranger to the majors, having pitched 177 innings over five seasons for four teams. However, his most productive time has been with the Padres, where he delivered 159 2/3 innings from 2021-23.

During his stint in San Diego, Crismatt boasted a commendable 3.83 ERA, a strikeout rate of 21.1%, a walk rate of 7.7%, and secured six holds. Initially debuting with the 2020 Cardinals, Crismatt has also had appearances for the D-backs and Dodgers, besides a recent Triple-A spell with the Rangers.

Earlier this year, Crismatt was part of the Dodgers organization, playing seven innings in the majors. There, he allowed two runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and no walks. Despite a performance that didn’t see him sticking with the Dodgers — leading to his designation for assignment and eventual free agency — Crismatt briefly joined the Rangers in late May and played for their Round Rock affiliate for around a month.

Throughout his time in Triple-A this season with both the Dodgers and Rangers, Crismatt has struggled, posting a 6.46 ERA over 23 2/3 innings. Despite this, Crismatt’s strikeout and walk rates tell a different story, signaling a potential for revival with a 23.4% strikeout rate and a mere 3.8% walk rate. His ERA has been adversely affected by an unusually high BABIP (Batting Average on Balls In Play) nearing .400 across the two teams.

Crismatt will now head to El Paso, aligning himself as a depth resource for the Padres. Given his proven major league performance — a solid 3.71 ERA across all his MLB outings — and the Padres’ familiarity with the pitcher, there’s anticipation that Crismatt might ascend to the major leagues again in the near term.
