“Monty needs to fire Boras” – MLB fans pin short-term contract woes on Scott Boras after Jordan Montgomery’s 1-year Diamondbacks contract

At last, Jordan Montgomery’s long free agency has ended and he has finally joined a franchise to play for in the 2024 MLB season.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Montgomery has signed a one-year contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks, earning him $25 million in 2024. The deal also includes a $25 million vesting option for the 2025 season.

The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal also shared the news on X/Twitter. However, many fans don’t seem too thrilled about the reported short-term contract for Montgomery.

Some fans blamed Montgomery’s short-term deal on his agent Scott Boras for not getting him a bigger contract after shopping him around all Spring Training:
“Sounds like another Boras L,” a fan said.

“Two things come to mind. 1) Scott Boras has had a terrible offseason. 2) Dbacks are winning the west, ” another wrote.

“It’s insane that Snell and Montgomery have to give Boras 5% after this. Do they thank him?” a comment reads.

“If I was Monty or Snell I’d fire Boras. He kept them out of an entire spring training, threw off their whole training regime and didn’t get them the money or contract they wanted. What a bad look,” another comment reads.

“Monty needs to fire Boras TN,” another fan wrote.

Other comments from fans soon followed on X:

Montgomery is the Arizona Diamondbacks’ second big move to improve its pitching rotation from the free market.

In December, the franchise bolstered their pitching staff by signing left-handed pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez to a four-year deal worth $80 million.

Jordan Montgomery bolsters D-backs rotation offering valuable depth

Jordan Montgomery paired with Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly at the top of the rotation strengthens the Diamondbacks’ starting pitching for next season.

Adding the 31-year-old has also given the D-backs another option in case Rodriguez needs extended time to recover from his lat issue. Rodriguez exited the game on March 19 with a left lat strain, landing him on the injury list at the start of the new season.

Last season, Montgomery turned in a stellar performance posting a 3.20 ERA, recording 166 strikeouts and pitching 188 ⅔ innings across 32 games while playing for both the St. Louis Cardinals and Texas Rangers.

What do you think of Jordan Montgomery’s one-year deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks? Do you think he should have got more in free agency? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
