Mets Eye Key Pitching Duo Before Trade Deadline

As the MLB trade deadline approaches, the New York Mets find themselves in a precarious position, hovering between contention and concession. With the team needing to clearly define their direction for the future, improvements to both the bullpen and the starting rotation are critical considerations for making a strong playoff push.

One of the most viable strategies for the Mets could involve transactions with the Texas Rangers, who have several assets that could address New York’s needs effectively. Among the potential additions for the Mets are starting pitcher Andrew Heaney and reliever David Robertson, both currently with Texas.

Heaney, a left-handed pitcher, is nearing the end of his contract and commands a salary of $13 million this season. Although boasting a less-than-stellar record at 3-9, his ERA of 3.80 across 17 starts and one relief appearance, coupled with his ability to consistently deliver strikes, suggests he could be a valuable asset to stabilize the Mets’ rotation.

David Robertson, previously with the Mets, is remembered for his strong performance against left-handed hitters despite being a right-handed pitcher. Available on a $10 million contract with a mutual option for 2025, Robertson could significantly fortify the Mets’ bullpen, particularly by addressing some of the issues seen with Jake Diekman in matchups against lefties.

As the trade interactions between the Mets and the Rangers have previously proven bold and impactful, such as last summer’s memorable Max Scherzer for Luisangel Acuna trade facilitated by Mets’ owner Steve Cohen’s financial backing, another similar trade could be on the horizon. With the Rangers possibly out of the playoff run, they might be looking to deal, making Heaney and Robertson reasonable targets for the Mets.

If the Mets are to make a serious run for the postseason, making decisive moves to acquire talent like Heaney and Robertson could prove crucial. Strengthening the pitching staff through these acquisitions would address immediate team needs and signal a strong commitment to competing at the highest levels this season.
