Marcus Semien Takes Unexpected Break, Ending Impressive Streak With Rangers

ARLINGTON — Texas Rangers’ stalwart second baseman Marcus Semien, known for his durability, will miss Thursday’s game against the San Diego Padres at Globe Life Field, marking the second game he’s sat out this 2024 season. This level of inactivity is a rare sight for Semien, who has not missed significant playing time since the 2020 season, which was abbreviated due to COVID-19, where he played in 53 of 60 games for the Oakland Athletics.

Throughout his 11-year Major League career spanning before this season, the consistent infielder appeared in a full slate of 162 games three times and played no less than 155 games in four additional seasons. The last time Semien played fewer than 161 games in a full season was in 2018, managing 159 games.

Rangers manager Bruce Bochy described the decision as a strategic rest day for Semien. “He’s just getting a day,” Bochy explained.

“Considering his tremendous output last year, breaking the record for number of at-bats and his contributions during our World Series run, it’s a tough spell currently. A mental break seemed timely.”

Before taking a day off on May 29, Semien had an impressive streak, having started 349 consecutive regular season games for the Rangers, in addition to every game in the postseason during their 2023 World Series campaign. His streak stands as the third-longest stretch in Rangers’ history, trailing only Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodríguez.

The plan was to rest Semien earlier, during the Rangers’ last road trip, but the situation changed when shortstop Corey Seager sustained a wrist injury after getting hit by a pitch, prompting Bochy to rest Seager instead.

Bochy expressed immense respect for Semien’s reliability, stating, “This guy is incredible. He shows up every day, fully committed to the team. We find it beneficial to give him a break today.”

On May 29, when Semien received his first rest day of the season, Bochy revealed that the second baseman was slightly injured following a collision with right fielder Adolis García. However, Bochy confirmed that Semien has no lingering issues from the incident, although his performance at the plate suggests otherwise. Since the collision, Semien’s batting average has dipped significantly.

Semien, who chose not to speak to the media before the game, was defended by Bochy. “Marcus is someone who wouldn’t openly discuss any issues that might be affecting him. He’s here to play every day, and that’s just who he is,” Bochy noted.

Despite the recent dip in his performance, Semien’s expected statistics, including batting and slugging average, suggest a better underlying performance than what his actual statistics reflect. This reassures that an adjustment period might simply be needed.

Manager Bochy remains optimistic, stating, “His timing is off, and that is undeniable. But we’ve seen him overcome this before. Marcus is a key member of our team, and we will continue to support him as we rely on his presence and resilience.”
