Dodgers Rally With 7-Run Outburst in 11th to Stun Giants After Glasnow’s Rocky Start

SAN FRANCISCO —

The San Francisco Giants had already earmarked Saturday as a “bullpen game,” given the current state of their starting rotation, which only boasts the healthy Logan Webb and Jordan Hicks while leaving them handicapped with Blake Snell, Kyle Harrison, Keaton Winn, Robbie Ray, and Alex Cobb sidelined due to injuries. However, what unfolded was an unforeseen bullpen match for the Los Angeles Dodgers, sparked by an underwhelming performance from their star pitcher Tyler Glasnow.

Entering the game, Glasnow showcased an impressive 8-5 record with a 2.88 ERA and led the National League with 135 strikeouts, having pitched no less than five innings in his initial 16 starts of the season. The expectations were abruptly dashed as Glasnow surrendered five runs and seven hits over merely three innings, setting the stage for the Dodgers’ bullpen to take over earlier than anticipated.

Despite Glasnow’s early exit, the Dodgers’ relief corps rose to the occasion, holding the Giants to just one earned run across the next eight innings. This effort paved the way for a dramatic 14-7 victory at Oracle Park, which was only decided after an explosive seven-run 11th inning by the Dodgers.

The game reached a pivotal moment in the 10th inning, thanks to veteran right-hander Daniel Hudson’s clutch performance. After the Dodgers had secured a temporary lead, Hudson managed to navigate a perilous bases-loaded scenario with only one out, preserving the tie and extending the game.

At the top of the 11th inning, the Dodgers’ offense caught fire, inaugurated by an intentional walk to Shohei Ohtani, who had already marked his territory with his National League-leading 26th homer earlier in the game. Will Smith’s two-run double followed by successive hits from Freddie Freeman, Teoscar Hernández, Chris Taylor, and Jason Heyward, alongside a sacrifice fly from Miguel Rojas, ultimately sealed the Giants’ fate.

Before the Dodgers took control in the late stages, the Giants had found success against Glasnow in the third inning, managing to circle the bases and accumulating five runs, a surprising high against a pitcher who had previously limited opposing hitters to a .179 average over his first 16 starts.

The back-and-forth nature of the game saw the Giants momentarily tie the game in the fifth inning, showcasing their resilience but ultimately falling short. The Dodgers’ crucial fourth-inning rally, primarily against Giants’ relievers Spencer Howard and Randy Rodriguez, demonstrated their depth and ability to capitalize on opportunities.

This marathon game, filled with strategic maneuvers, standout performances, and a late-game offensive explosion, proved to be a testament to both teams’ tenacity but highlighted the unexpected turns a baseball game can take, especially when the bullpen is called upon earlier and performs beyond expectations.
