Dodgers Hit With Triple Trouble: Kershaw’s Comeback, Muncy’s Injury, and Vargas’s Uncertain Role

LOS ANGELES — The status of Clayton Kershaw for his upcoming minor league rehab start remains uncertain as the Los Angeles Dodgers carefully monitor the ace’s progress. After experiencing soreness from his last outing, his appearance for Triple-A Oklahoma City in Reno this Tuesday is up in the air.

During a Low-A game last Wednesday with Rancho Cucamonga, Kershaw returned to the mound for the first time since undergoing shoulder surgery in November. He managed to strike out five while giving up one run over three innings. Following this, Dodgers’ manager Dave Roberts described Kershaw’s subsequent bullpen session at Dodger Stadium on Saturday as “light,” indicating the team’s cautious approach to his recovery.

“The key is how he feels after playing catch tomorrow,” Roberts mentioned, pointing out the importance of Sunday’s session at Dodger Stadium in determining Kershaw’s immediate future. The Dodgers intend to proceed carefully, ensuring Kershaw’s soreness is typical post-start discomfort, rather than symptoms of a new complication.

Kershaw’s rehab journey requires at least two additional starts before he can rejoin the Dodgers’ roster, yet the team refrains from imposing a strict timeline for his return. Roberts emphasized patience and adherence to both Kershaw’s and the medical team’s assessments.

In another blow to the Dodgers, third baseman Max Muncy was placed on the 60-day injured list this Friday, extending his absence until after the All-Star break due to a slow-healing strained oblique. The decision, as explained by Roberts, aligns with Muncy’s expected recovery period, during which the team has notably felt his absence.

The Dodgers, who were second in the majors in runs per game with Muncy active, have seen their offensive production decline without him. Since his last game, the team’s average runs per game have dropped, and third basemen have collectively struggled at the plate.

In addressing the third base situation, Roberts also discussed Miguel Vargas, who predominantly played third base in the minors but has been positioned in left field this season. Despite Vargas taking grounders at third, there are no immediate plans to move him back to the infield, with Roberts signaling a focus on Vargas’s outfield role for the time being.

As the Dodgers navigate Kershaw’s recovery and Muncy’s absence, the team’s adaptability and depth are under the spotlight, with strategic decisions ahead to maintain their competitive edge.
